I keep finding myself talking to people about idli, and also a friend reminded me that I used to post about restaurants on the internet, so here’s (what might be the first in a series of posts about) my thoughts on idli from a restaurant in Croydon.
Lunch today was idli from SKVP (Shree Krishna Vada Pav) on London Road. This is part of a chain; I’ve previously been to the one in Harrow, and failed to go to the one in Hounslow because it was temporarily closed when I got there. The entire menu is vegetarian, and they have separate listings of no-onion-no-garlic food and vegan food.
The idli were smaller than usual, but there were four of them instead of the usual three. They were very slightly on the dense side, but properly cooked all the way through, so overall the texture was fine. There was a pleasing level of sourness.
The chutneys were less to my taste. The white one had an unpleasantly raw taste, and was also quite runny. The green one was overwhelmingly sweet and even runnier. The red one had a good texture but lacked tomato flavour; it was also quite sour, which it shouldn't be, so I wonder if it was made with unripe tomatoes.
The sambar was good — plenty of flavour, pleasing texture, neither too thick nor too runny.
Verdict: I wouldn’t order idli from here again, mainly because of the chutneys not being up to scratch.

Being in Bengaluru has required 100% of my attention, so I couldn’t even post. Today is the last day, last idli breakfast. Every day I have been ordering filter coffee along with my breakfast. Today the waiter didn’t ask for my order after coming by with water (a default) and I was disappointed that I’d have to wait until I could flag him down again.
A few minutes later he came by, “Here’s your filter coffee ma’am”
❤️

A breakfast I’ve been daydreaming about. OK actually I ate two breakfasts worth of breakfast. In my defense, my stomach is at dinner time while it’s breakfast time in IST. #food #south_indian_cuisine #idli

Maybe not best but surely amongst the topmost satisfying purchases from Costco yet - $8 dosa/idli batter (NJ provenance, zero unnecessary ingredients listed). Used half the 4 lb tub for brunch for steamed #Idli - and partner made some quick coconut chutney for it, and we had various milagai podi ("gunpowder") from India. Aaah! The idlis turned out fantastic!

I'm dumb... I should have gone with the Veg meals... I'm flying to India for fucks sake... Why did I pick non-veg and got white people breakfast... My seat mates were enjoying their #Idli and #Dahl
By the time I asked for extras, I was told there was already a shortage of Veg meals... So I had another non-veg

The thing I think I cracked this time is cooking time and amount to put in the mold. In the instant pot, I need to warm the water on the sautee setting, then put in the stands, then set to pressure cook for 1 minute and separately set a timer for 10 minutes. After the 10 minutes are up, at which point the 1 minute steam will be done, manual release the steam. Then wait a moment to take them out of the molds. #cooking #food #idli
