  1. I can't stand the way liberal outlets dance around calling fascists what they are, as though Le Pen and her party didn't have well documented, long-standing, close connections with rather explicit and often violent fascist groups ("identitarians," GUD, les Zouaves, among others).

    Nonetheless, the dynamics here are worth noting, so I'm begrudgingly posting it anyway.

    ===

    While Le Pen is a scourge of liberal elites, who has courted the working class, Bardella is now wooing conservative business leaders who have historically been wary of Le Pen’s National Rally. While the earthy Le Pen is strong in the disillusioned, former industrial towns of the northeast, the polished Bardella is targeting the wealthier south.

    The National Rally’s old guard may not feel entirely at ease with Bardella’s more economically liberal approach but it understands the electoral arithmetic. Winning the presidency means winning more than half the vote, and that will mean poaching voters from the center-right Les Républicains. For that task, Bardella is the man.

    Of course, for now, Bardella follows Le Pen’s orders — and she coordinates his forays into new voter bases — but she is also far from blind to his increasingly rapid ascent.

    The party’s top brass is treading on eggshells as a new reality emerges. Le Pen’s candidacy is up in the air until the appeal for her conviction, most probably in the summer of 2026, and in the meantime pollsters are revealing Bardella is just as credible as a presidential candidate. Officially, the party is pretending it’s business as usual, but it’s not.

    The unease about which way the party is going — and who will be the front-runner for the Elysée — is now palpable.

  7. At the start of July, "identitarian" leader Martin Sellner went to Augsburg, Germany, and was greeted by a crew of antifascists. This is right and proper.

    However, at the end of July, German police came and busted into the homes of eight different antifascists in Augsburg. They didn't arrest anyone. It seems like they just wanted to do damage and intimidate people.

    The people the cops targeted are pretty seriously shaken and between them they now have a few thousand euros in repairs to do.

    So if you've got a few bucks to spare, please consider throwing them toward these folks, whose "crime" was organizing against a well known international fascist leader. Thanks!

  8. Just a couple of days after being kicked out of Switzerland, Austrian "identitarian" fascist Martin Sellner is now barred from entering Germany, effective immediately. This guy's world just keeps getting smaller.

    It turns out the EU's Freedom of Movement Act allows member states to ban citizens of other member states if they can show that there is "a real and sufficiently serious threat to the public order, affecting the basic interests of society." As Martina Renner of Die Linke says, "Participation in meetings on the territory of the Federal Republic of Germany to plan and implement millions of deportations of people from Germany violates these fundamental interests in a fundamental way." So the city of Potsdam (outside Berlin) applied for a ban and they got it.

    To recap what's been going on with this guy over the past couple of months, Sellner spoke at a fashy conference in Potsdam in November and openly called for the expulsion of anyone with a "migration background", including German citizens with, basically, non-white ancestors. That conference took place at a villa just a few miles from the site of the 1942 Wannsee Conference, where the plans for the "Final Solution" were put into motion. Those kinds of "optics" are kind of hard to overlook, and it's also hard to imagine the organizers weren't aware of that.

    At any rate, in January of this year, the magazine Correctiv published a bombshell expose on the conference in Potsdam, triggering a massive wave of protests across Germany against the far right generally.

    I have no doubt that Sellner will take this as an opportunity to appeal to his supporters for still more money. It's what they all do. You can't stop the grift. Still, for a guy who's so into being all pan-European and shit, the growing number of countries he can't enter has gotta be uncomfortable (he's barred from the UK permanently and has in the past been prevented from entering the US).

  9. Well, it seems Austrian "identitarian" fascist and "remigration" theorist Martin Sellner has himself just been kicked out of Switzerland. He went to give a talk (or something) to a group of people from the neo-Nazi group Junge Tat and their supporters outside Zurich, and the cops swooped in pretty quick. (Junge Tat is somewhat similar to Patriot Front in the US, but with even dumber masks.)

    I'm not sure what exactly the grounds were for deporting him, but I can say that he's in the past been denied entry into the UK, mostly due to the fact that he's just a terrible person.

    Now, of course, he's whining that, no, countries don't have the right to kick undesirables out of their countries. Cool, man, cool. Good job.

  14. German news website @correctiv_org published a long investigatory article a couple of days ago about a shadowy conference that took place in November. It brought together neo-Nazis, wealthy funders, and influential members of the far right party Alternative for Germany (AfD), as well as members of the reactionary caucus within the major center-right party.

    The goal of the weekend-long meeting was to gin up support for a scheme to deport people with a "migration background" from Germany, even if they have German citizenship. The "master plan" (their words) would involve claiming a hunk of territory in Northern Africa and sticking deportees there. In the US, it harkens back to 19th century "colonization", wherein various factions supported the idea of taking over territory in Panama or Haiti or somewhere in Africa to deport Black people to. Of course, there are more recent examples of racial/ethnic expulsion plans in Germany, most notably the Nazi-era plan to deport Jews to Madagascar. There are lots of other historical examples, but by now we generally know schemes like this by a facile euphemism: "ethnic cleansing".

  15. A quick roundup and contextualization of the violent "march" by reactionary thugs in Romans-sur-Isere, France last weekend.

    ====

    Last Saturday, some 80–100 white nationalists from across France arrived in the working-class Monnaie neighborhood in the southeastern town of Roman-sur-Isère. They showed up with baseball bats, metal rods, and brass knuckles in hand, chanting things like “Islam hors d’Europe” (Islam out of Europe) and “La rue, la France, nous appartient” (The street, [and] France, belong to us). There were 20 arrests that night, and nationalist groups are now describing six of the arrestees, who have already received 6–10 month sentences, as “political prisoners”. They’re also saying that one of their people, who is still very much alive, was “lynched”.

  16. Sad, but not surprising. The comparison here is with their last survey, which they conducted in 2016. Ca. 2015-17 was sort of a high-water mark for xenophobic rhetoric as "identitarian" and other reactionary factions were hard at work ginning up fears about refugees from the war in Syria and elsewhere. But in the interim, a lot of the sentiment that they were pushing seems not to have receded, but rather become sort of embedded. In short: at first glance, this looks like one more indicator that reactionary attitudes (incl., to be clear, racism, xenophobia, misogyny, transphobia, etc.) are increasingly normalized and mainstream.

  18. The neo-nazi Nationaldemokratische Partei Deutschlands (NPD, National Democratic Party of Germany) has renamed itself Die Heimat (The Homeland). They claim that they are now an "anti-party movement and patriotic service provider" that wants to build "stronger patriotic networks, effective coalitions on the street, in parliaments, and in the pre-political space."

    NPD has been around since the late 1960s and has produced quite a few even smaller splinter parties over the intervening decades (nobody hates Nazis like other Nazis). The wording they use to describe their new focus (which is a change in tactics, not outlook) sounds like a response to the successes of other entities on the German far right. A new survey, for instance, says that the far-right party Alternative for Germany (AfD) would get 19% of the vote if elections were held today. That's the highest AfD has gotten to date, and puts them on par with the Social Democrats -- i.e., the party of the current head of state.

    Meanwhile, the reference to "pre-political space" sounds a lot like they've been learning from German new right activists and the closely related "identitarian" movement, both of which constantly drone on about "metapolitics" and the need to influence the "pre-political space." The identitarian movement was banned in France a couple of years ago, and its symbols were classified as hate symbols and therefore outlawed in Austria, all of which has certainly reduced their visibility recently. But by contrast, an effort to ban the NPD ended in 2017 with a court ruling that said that, while NPD does in fact want to destroy the current social order, it is too small and ineffective to achieve that goal, so we can't actually ban them. If your party isn't even important enough to ban, and activists from an adjacent movement with different tactics and different aesthetics are looking around for a new home, it seems like a pretty savvy move to adopt some of that movement's jargon and welcome those folks into the fold.

    Additionally, the neo-nazi microparty Der III. Weg (The Third Way), which I believe is a splinter of a splinter that derived initially from the NPD, has achieved quite a bit of visibility over the past few years despite being significantly smaller even the the NPD. While the NPD is estimated to have fewer than 6,000 members, Der III. Weg has something like 650 total. Nonetheless, Der III. Weg knows how to present itself in well edited online videos that are shot to make two dozen people marching in file and carrying flags look like a much bigger group -- which is another tactic borrowed from the "identitarians." Images from III. Weg marches regularly appear in solidarity videos posted online by neo-fascist groups in other countries, which is not an honor granted to the NPD very often.

    So in all, this rebrand looks like an effort to catch up with the zeitgeist on the far right, both in Germany and abroad. Their pursuit of "stronger networks" and "effective coalitions" can only succeed if they can make themselves appealing to like-minded people and integrate themselves into networks that already exist.

    + Info

    Far-right propaganda on Graz's traffic signs:

    Pictures 1-3:
    Multiple stickers from the neofascist Identitarian movement. (taken this and last year)

    Picture 4:
    The sticker says: "death penalty for child molesters", which is a common argument in right wing circles. It is from "Widerstand.info" which in the past was a far-right blog but now it just links to the telegram account from a far-right politician, Miachel Brück.

    In the strictest sences it is not a traffic sign but i found it disgusting to again see how the far right tries to take advantage of peoples reasonable desire to protect children to further their extremist views and defend cruelties.
