I turned up today somewhere that I have a membership card for and sorted among the several cards in my wallet to find the right one.
And I thought, not for the first time, that if there was a card onto which could be loaded arbitrary tokens by arbitrary organisations, such that I could be admitted to each of those on presentation of that card _and nothing else_, I would mind much less that it was a mandated UK ID card.Presumably the first #token loaded would be the #Citizen one.

"Ministers have switched to promoting #DigitalID, which will be held in a wallet on smartphones, as a way to make life easier for people using public services."
"Despite a distinctly lukewarm reception from the public so far, support from the top for digital ID has never fallen off the agenda. Let's not forget it started life in the form of national #IDCards under former prime minister Tony Blair in the early 2000s."

UK Government Plans to Charge Admission to National Museums for International Visitors
A terrible idea. Just make art galleries free for all and encourage tourism!
*Reads article*
".. the implementation of charging international visitors to enter national museums is “conditional on the government first rolling out a universal ID scheme, which would make it easier to differentiate domestic and international visitors.”"
FUCK NO!

it's bank cards as pseudo ID cards rather than doing it properly. The next step will be store loyalty cards. Afterall, they do know rather a lot about you! #VoterID #UK_politics #IDCards

The government has rolled back a key part of its plans to introduce a digital identity scheme by the end of this parliament.
People will no longer be required to sign up to the digital ID scheme in order to seek work in the UK.https://www.computing.co.uk/news/2026/government/government-backtracks-on-digital-id

Very pleased to see that the government has listened to reason and scrapped their crazy scheme for mandatory ID cards. This is a welcome development.
Maybe the strong opposition to it had an effect after all. Just goes to show that it's worth speaking up, signing petitions, writing to MPs, and all that kind of thing.

Government drops plans for mandatory digital ID to work in UK | BBC | ID Cards are not dead yet and we need to keep the pressure up…
… however, this is pointing in the right direction:
“The government has dropped plans requiring workers to sign up to its digital ID scheme in order to prove their right to work in the UK, the BBC understands. By 2029, right to work checks will be done digitally – for example by using biometric passports – but registering with the new digital ID programme will be optional.”

Whistleblowers raise ‘extreme’ concern about security of government’s Digital ID | ITV News
My understanding from friends is One Login is a glorified bastion host that reliant services & parties are obligated to blindly trust, making it a giant SPOF; that alone would be terrifying at national scale, but then: this:
#digitalId #idCards #oneLogin“Whistleblowers have told ITV News that One Login is failing to meet the mandatory, minimum government cybersecurity standards, ‘Secure by Design’ and the ‘Cyber Assessment Framework’”

I have spent much of the morning cherry picking out key points from yesterday's parliamentary debate about #IDCards
The E-petition brought forward by the people of this country at almost 3,mill was the 4th largest, and almost every MP who participated in the debate spoke against the measure
The session ended with the g'ment speaking but taking no intervention - quite telling in its own way.
The whole transcript is below xxx
(I read this shit so you don't have to 😄)

"Fourthly, this system will be a public good. I want to build this system because it will benefit ordinary people, not because I am under the grip of some international elite or globalist diktat, as someone said earlier, which is quite the antisemitic trope to throw at a Jewish Minister".
#IDCards debate playing the antisemitic card ffs 🙄

"We are working with the UK’s leading national security experts, including the National Cyber Security Centre, to build a system with cutting-edge protections against cyber-attacks and identity fraud. Let me be specific: we are not creating a centralised master database. The new system will be federated. Specifically, that means that there will be strict legal firewalls on what information can be shared."

'We've heard loud and clear across the Chamber today about the attack on civil liberties. The Government said that this is not about checking papers, but that is exactly what is being introduced. They talked about the right to work and someone needing to check papers, so it is about checking papers. The Resolution Foundation says that 91% of the working-age population will be employed at some point in their life. This is essentially mandatory for the whole population" - Victoria Collins #IDCards

"You have given us a clear mandate
And we will use it to deliver change
To restore service and respect to politics
End the era of noisy performance
Tread more lightly on your lives
And unite our country" - Keir Starmer's inaugural speech as Prime MinisterBut this is the man who wants to bring in #IDCards
So how is that "treading lightly on our lives" ?

"Although I appreciate the merits of the scheme, as my hon. Friend has set out, surely the fundamental question facing us today is one of public consent. Some 4,800 of my constituents have signed this petition. Does my hon. Friend agree that such a scheme cannot be introduced without clear consent from the public" - Luke Myer

"If this scheme [#IDCards] is introduced, it seems impossible that we can be protected from any future Government who are determined to utterly disregard a lot more of our basic human rights. This iteration of digital ID could, through a unique identification number, link our most sensitive biometric information to our names, ages, nationalities, addresses, medical information and housing and criminal histories, enabling a detailed profile worthy of the Chinese Government" - Sîan Bery

"The government has produced no credible reassurance that the NHS number will not become a gateway to expanded datasets or new intrusive linkages. There is no clear plan to prevent accidental disclosures that could put vulnerable children at risk, for example by revealing the address of a family fleeing domestic abuse or exposing confidential adoption records. Those are not theoretical concerns; they have occurred in practice'

"many in this country are deeply concerned about the direction in which we are travelling #IDcards are one thing; restricting jury trials is another. Facial recognition at tube stations and now even in supermarkets is something that people find deeply disturbing. Across the country there's a whole vein of thought where people are feeling a quite reasonable sense of paranoia about the levels of surveillance that they are under. Members of Parliament would do well to try to understand that" Corbyn

Starmer’s digital ID cards are the last thing Britain needs
The benefits of BritCard accrue not to us, but to the state: a unifying ID which bureaucrats can use to oversee our lives, linking all the parts together. But it is not fulfilling an unmet need. There is no market failure in digital identity services in 2025. The UK’s private sector identity market is thriving. Here’s how it evolved…
