  1. What sort of citations are issued to people on bikes in Monterey County? Among others, failure
to stop at a stop sign, and riding a pocket bike in an area designated for a vehicle.

Resources on Riding Skills, Bike Laws, and Safety bikemonterey.org/resources/res include California bike law summaries, Bicycling Monterey’s primary tips (33 topics, including sidewalks, crosswalks, bike parties, and more); info specific to e-bikes (including determining if a mobility device is street legal); resources from others for all types of bikes (including avoiding a collision, biking around trucks, and our compilation of various resources in Spanish); Smart Cycling videos, in Spanish and English. And, to share with motorists: Bike-Safe Driving / tips for people who drive, in Spanish and English.

  2. When we updated our California bike law summary poster today (PDF, with clickable links: bikemonterey.org/wp-content/up ), we added a note about stop signs: To advocate for a new California law to allow a "Bicycle Safety Stop" / "Stop-As-Yield" / "Idaho Stop" at stop signs, contact CalBike.org! bikemonterey.org/bicycle-safet

  3. If they're going to make running a red light a fucking *criminal* violation, when is #BikeNYC getting the #IdahoStop legalized?

  4. 7 minutes compilation video of #somervilleMA and #CambridgeMA drivers running lights, driving the wrong way down streets etc - posted to r/somerville (by a frustrated biker recently cited for an #idahoStop)

  5. Drivers! Your time is too important to be spent needlessly on city streets. So make a habit of the #TorontoStop - like the #IdahoStop, it's a rolling stop at a controlled intersection but applied to cars, NOT bikes. Of course, it's not strictly legal, but it is awfully popular in #Toronto (and maybe your city too!) and, so far as I can tell, never ticketed by the police. After all, what's the life of a pedestrian or a cyclist compared to your convenience? #topoli #BikeTooter #WarOnCars

  6. @BrianPierce there’s not much good about living in Idaho these days, but the #IdahoStop remains one the good things! If our current legislators understood it they would no doubt get rid of it. 🤨

  7. I posted this even more egregious example, from my trip to pick up my kid from school yesterday, on the #birdsite.
It's not lost on me how many twitter trolls would rather focus on my #IdahoStop than the guy in the Jeep who nearly caused 2 head-on collisions and then stared me down in his driveway.

If drivers held themselves to the standard they expect for bikes, they'd kill a lot fewer people.

  8. @stribley @clive
Oregon has a version of the Idaho stop: those riding bikes can treat stop signs and blinking red lights as yields. #IdahoStop

  9. I learned a number of things from this excellent @clive piece on cyclists, stop signs, and signals (including that the Idaho Stop is 40 years old!! Whyyyyy did Newsom veto it last year!?!). I feel better equipped to argue against the “cyclists roll through stop signs so they deserve to die” crowd, now. #BikeTooter #RoadSafety #IdahoStop clivethompson.medium.com/why-c

  10. For the first time, #NHTSA administrator endorses the "Idaho Stop" for bike riders:

“The Idaho stop allows cyclists to manage risks to their advantage,” Carlson said in a virtual keynote address to the Transportation Alternatives-run conference. “It increases their visibility to drivers and reduces their exposure. It also promotes safety in numbers by encouraging more people to bike which reduces cyclists overall risks.”

  11. Maybe things are getting better at the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration (NHTSA). They released a Fact Sheet on the "Idaho Stop" for bike riders, and it's . . . actually accurate.

"These laws showed added safety benefits for bicyclists in states where they were evaluated, and [they] may positively affect the environment, traffic, and transportation."

The fewer barriers to biking and walking, the healthier we all will be.
