Absolutely. It's part and parcel of the alternate history thing. Having been a member of the SCA and knowing a bit (just enough to be dangerous) about clothes also helps.

When I go to events, did I ever wear hall costumes or compete in any of the costume events?
I wore a lot of costumes and competed when I was younger. And thinner.
I still dress up when requested to judge cat shows.

Creative costuming is so much fun. SF Conventions have opened up to "found" costuming--it's okay to just modify or put together outfits that you find in thrift stores, Walmart, online, etc. Add fabric paint and 3D-printed stuff, etc. Makes costume available to everyone with an imagination.
