Bring a burst of electric color to your day with this stunning macro photograph of a blooming Ice Plant (Carpobrotus edulis). The image captures the flower at the peak of its beauty, with sunlight filtering through the translucent, hot pink petals, creating a glowing, almost neon effect.

  3. These bright ice plant blooms caught my eye in a sea of rock—sharp color, sharp light, and a little surprise in the landscape.

Follow for more close-up botanical shots.

  4. My iceplant / Mesembryanthemum Crystallinum has been in its own Kratky pot full of saline for 24 hours now. It's thriving!

I am a very happy mad scientist / indoor gardener / space station denizen today. ☺️

  5. I did it! I moved my #IcePlant to a #Kratky pot (1l juice jar, covered in a black sock) with a 0.1 M NaCl solution. I am now growing, or attempting to grow, a plant in salt water.

I even managed to find yet another sock with a hole in the toe that I saved in the confidence I would find a use for it.

This is pinnacle mad scientist. My (space station) life has peaked.

I am so excited to see how my little plant fares! 3/n

  6. More information on the benefits of NaCl for iceplants, aka Mesembryanthemum Crystallinum . (This fascinates me!)

It truly feels like an experiment worthy of my Space Station Life.™😂 2/n

  7. My Common iceplant (#MesembryanthemumCrystallinum) has had a growth burst this week!

I *may* eventually transfer it from its current #hydroponic slot to a #Kratky set-up so I can experiment with adding saline!

Has anyone here done that (Kratky ice plant, hydroponic ice plant, and/or adding salt)?

I'd love advice about harvesting select leaves early if anyone has experience with this specific plant. 1/n

  8. Random new fact I learned tonight: ice plant (Mesembryanthemum crystallinum) is extremely invasive, and very difficult to remove due to seeds which apparently can germinate a VERY long time later (20+ years, rumors of 100 years). It appears that they are also edible (served widely in Japan as a vegetable) 🤔 #iceplant

  9. Pink: level 12! Sun wasn't even shining at time of photo! #Iceplant

  10. #iceplant’s are so nice. They’re understated and humble in appearance but when they’re out, they’re just lovely.

It’s native to the Eastern Cape in South Africa and is naturalised in Portugal and the states of South Australia, Western Australia, and Victoria in Australia, as well as Pacific Grove, California.

Not sure how a species becomes ‘naturalised’ elsewhere, but apparently it is, in those other locales according to wiki.

    Anyone have any idea?
