The #SantaClara County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously to create what is believed to be the #BayArea ’s first official “ICE-free zone.”

  2. Preckwinkle issues executive order to create '#ICE-free zones' in Cook County

It's the latest in local efforts to establish "ICE-free zones." The Chief Judge of Cook County has already barred civil arrests at Cook County courthouses and #Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson signed a similar executive order making it so that city property — including parking lots next to Chicago public schools, libraries, parks and city buildings — cannot be used by federal agents as staging areas.

  3. "Jahn and Heuzé projected/estimated the first ice-free #Arctic day using output from over 300 computer simulations. They found that most models predicted that the first #IceFree day could happen within nine to 20 years after 2023 regardless of how humans alter their greenhouse gas emissions.

The earliest ice-free day in the Arctic Ocean could occur within three years, [by 2027]."

  4. #GrayWhale, Long Absent From #Atlantic, Is Spotted Off Massachusetts
Gray #whales are regularly found in #Pacific, but sightings in Atlantic are extremely rare. #Climatechange is largely to blame for sightings. #NorthwestPassage, which connects Atlantic & Pacific, has been #icefree during summer months in recent years. Without ice, gray whales were able to swim through the passage, something that would not have been possible in the last century. nytimes.com/2024/03/06/science

  5. #ArcticOcean could be '#icefree' within the decade, researchers warn
Loss of #Arctic #seaice has long been a graphic measure of human-caused climate change, with wrenching images of suffering polar bears illustrating a worsening planetary crisis. Now, new research has found that Arctic #Ocean sea ice is shrinking even faster than previously thought -- and that the Arctic may start to see its first "ice-free" days within the current decade.

  6. "Vast regions of the #Antarctic coastline were #IceFree for the first time in the observational record.

"To say unprecedented isn't strong enough," Dr Doddridge said.

"For those of you who are interested in statistics, this is a five-sigma event. So it's five standard deviations beyond the mean. Which means that if nothing had changed, we'd expect to see a winter like this about once every 7.5 million years."

  7. Five consecutive days of strong northward #icedrift causes a rapid drop in the #seaice conditions in the regions of #Svalbard and northern #Barents Sea.

The drop in the #seaice extent in the #Barents Sea is difficult to miss in this figure.

Are we going towards a record-LONG #icefree Barents Sea? 🤔
