  5. I redid one of Martin's sweatshirts because it had faded and I think it came out pretty sick. The front wasn't tied so it's more murky-blurple.

  7. it looks like it's going to be hot all week which is bad news for me but good news for the ice dyeing I'm doing. this is a lime green volunteer shirt, and if I tied it right, it'll have star armpits and if I tied it wrong it'll have funky pentagons. good either way.

  9. took everything I learned from dyeing martin's sweatshirt and did some of my old shirts too! leaving them outside for 36 hours in the hot hot heat helped a lot I think.

  11. This could be fun. I might get to show y’all the difference that different cuts of ice can make! Last batch I used ice shaped more like cubes. This time it’s the cylindrical kind with little hollows on the ends. Sometimes that makes a difference in the pattern the dye makes as it settles into the fabric. Hopefully I’ll give you something interesting to look at.

  13. Got some things soaking in soda ash solution, getting ready for another round of dyeing. My hand and arm are almost-but-not-quite healed from last week’s blood draw, so it might still be a challenge. Buuuut I also need something to distract myself from fixating on knowing my doctor has the results and I won’t see them until Wednesday. So, good ol’ Distraction Art it is!

  15. Last one for the day! This scarf was done only in black dye. Any colors seen here either hitched a ride from someone else’s ice, or separated on their own. I really love this one, I think it’s going to my sister-in-law for Christmas.

  17. Alright, now we’re getting into one of my favorite things to do- any large piece of fabric. In this case, scarves! I bought a bunch of white Calvin Klein scarves on sale and had no ideas if they were going to hold the dye. Well, they sure did! And that DAMN PINK just got itself into everything! It wasn’t supposed to be on the first one at all, but I kind of like it. The second one is only purple dye! It separates into those two colors and leaves no purple. #IceDye #Artist #Art

  19. Shirt 3: This is a gift for my incredible physical therapist of 2 years, who is going through a bit of a rough time. Her favorite color is purple. I wore a shirt I’d made to a session once and she asked if I sold them, because she wanted to buy one. I don’t sell them, but I stored that bit of info away for a rainy day. Interestingly, I kind of think this looks like a garden on a rainy day.

  21. Shirt 2 and Handkerchief:
The shirt turned out way more like the first shirt than I’d intended, mostly because that damn maroon crept into everything. I do like it, though, especially how very different the front and back are.
The handkerchief was a beautiful accident. Every time I do this, I try to put a few things at the bottom of the tub. This was one of those things. That means it got dyed purely by other things melting onto it, and then soaking. I love it. #IceDye #DisabledArtist #Art

  23. Shirt 1: this was a 10+ years old top that lived at the bottom of my drawer. Not in good enough shape to donate anywhere. The only prep notes I wrote were “all the colors!”

  25. 1/3 And finally some results. The thing I love most about ice dyeing is the meditative unpredictability. If you dissolve fiber reactive dye in water the way it’s meant to be used, you get the color on the label. But most powdered dyes are mixed from multiple pigments. If you sprinkle the dry powder over the ice, it separates into its component parts, and as the ice melts, the water carries the individual colors to the fabric in beautiful patterns that are fully out of your control. #IceDye

  27. 12 hours later! The ice has all melted overnight as planned, next steps are rinsing, washing, and drying. Almost everything looks super pigmented now, but I won’t know until the very end how much dye the fabric will actually hold onto. I can already tell the leggings are retaining almost nothing (ultimately maybe none of the turquoise, despite the spoonfuls of turquoise dye I used), but that was pretty much expected. I’ll be happy if I get some cotton candy clouds.

  29. This looks like a muddy, splotchy mess now. But hopefully, it’ll be beautifully dyed clothing tomorrow (3 shirts, 1 lingerie set, 1 pair of leggings, and 3 scarves, plus 3 little bags and a handkerchief in the space below). No idea if a few of these things are going to hold the dye, there may not be high enough natural fabric content, but they should still be pretty nonetheless. Ice dyeing is an exercise in letting go and trusting the process.
