Greenland’s melting ice caps reveal the true extent of climate change.
In recent decades Greenland – 80% of which is covered with ice – has recorded a loss of frozen mass that outpaced previous estimates by 20%.
This rapid reduction not only has consequences for Greenland’s inhabitants, but also on a global scale, as it affects rising sea levels and the balance of the planet’s climate systems.

Nature: Warming of +1.5 °C is too high for polar ice sheets
"...Mass loss from ice sheets in Greenland and Antarctica has quadrupled since the 1990s and now represents the dominant source of global mean sea-level rise from the cryosphere. This has raised concerns about their future stability and focussed attention on the global mean temperature thresholds that might trigger more rapid retreat or even collapse..."

'The ice melted beneath our feet': The huskies that revealed the rapid shrinking of Greenland's ice.
In 2019, climate scientist Steffen Olsen took a startling photo of huskies appearing to walk on water.
The photo quickly went viral as it revealed the reality of Greenland's rapidly melting ice.

The vast island, with a population of just 57k, has been caught up in a geopolitical race for dominance in the #Arctic, where melting #IceCaps are making its #resources more accessible & opening new #shipping routes. Both #Russia & #China have intensified #military activity in the region.
"People want change...We want more business to finance our welfare," said Jens-Frederik Nielsen, #Demokraatit's leader & a former minister of industry & #minerals.

Also I obviously didn’t know Mike Veeck had a woman on his independent team. Reminds me of the time ~1997 when my parents, my sister and I went to a #Raleigh #Icecaps game and Manon #Rheaume was one of the backups for the opposing team. The Icecaps were winning pretty solidly as I recall, and #DortonArena broke out in chants of “WE WANT RHEAUME! WE WANT RHEAUME!”
I think that even kid me understood it was unusual to see a woman in men’s pro sports. Might not get another chance any time soon.
