I bought a cheap iBeacon device and tested it with various BLE tracker apps from F-droid on Android 15. The apps can see it and more or less accurately tell how far away it is.

I think some of these apps can notify when the device comes into range, but not when the signal gets weak or is lost, which is what I want. When searching the web, I find lots of coding tips for rolling my own app, but I'm not really feeling the urge for that just yet. I am of course interested in Linux solutions as well.

I have a few Tiles, but there's no way to activate this functionality without paying through Google. I don't have a Google account and probably never will.

Hat jemand bereits Erfahrung mit dem Einsatz von "driversnote" und dem "ibeacon" als digitales Fahrtenbuch? Funktioniert das auch im Rahmen des deutschen Steuerrechts und der damit verbundenen Vorgaben?
Wenn ich es richtig sehe, kann man auch Arztfahrten als eigene Kategorie eingeben?
Wie aber ist es bei Fahrradfahrten? Funktioniert der beacon da auch? (mein Arbeitgeber erstattet auch solche Fahrten)

Dear @homeassistant lazy web, do you know of a BLE tracking device that works with Google's Find My Device service and that also emits #iBeacon signal?

There is Chipolo One Point that works with Find My Device, but I cannot find any docs confirming it is an iBeacon device too. The classic Chipolo One is an iBeacon device.

It would be nice if there was a device that works in #HomeAssistant and in Find My Device at the same time.

I just had to look up the official docs of device trackers for the Person entity in #HomeAssistant at https://www.home-assistant.io/integrations/person/ to correctly implement my custom last known area #iBeacon tracker. I manually set its source type to GPS (and not Bluetooth LE), as it always reports to be home, and that would ruin person location reporting when used as one of the device trackers for a person. Now I can use that to implement a more complex tracker with more branching logic to it.

Weirdly, #homeassistant can still "see" the tags, with it's broken distance calculation (weighted average?) and useless "source" field.

I'd file a bug but I am not arguing with #stalebot again. (And even their humans are not great.)

@moritzheiber what a #privacy nightmare! I think the device 'learns' after a while, not to activate Bluetooth and WiFi, when deactivating Airplane Mode, if you keep deactivating them - mine does at least. But after every iOS update, Apple automatically activates Bluetooth. It's my understanding however, that BLE does not require Bluetooth to be activated on a device - it's on permanently, or am I wrong? #iBeacon #BLE #Bluetooth

Is there a free software privacy-respecting alternative to #Chipolo, #Tile, Samsung #SmartTag and Apple #AirTag? It's not these companies owning our devices, but us end users instead. We should be in control.

Ideally, the alternative would work for all the tracking devices and we wouldn't need a separate app for each. Even better, we would benefit from having one community that crowd-sources location updates across all of the deceivingly disparate #BLE tag variants.

My wife and me wanted to swap the ownership of a #Chipolo One tag (i.e., who adds the tag first to their app). First me as a non-owner removed it from my app, then her from her app. Trying to add the tag again ("pairing" as it's called in the app) failed on both of our phones as the tag was locked on the Chipolo server after the removal. Why, oh why is it locked? Now we are at the mercy of Chipolo customer support to unlock it for us. What an #AntiFeature.

Are Apple iBeacons still a thing? Are they actively being developed? HomeKit/Matter/Thread compatible? 🤔

Apple made a big deal out of them when they were first announced, seems like they’ve fallen off the map.
