Isn't this what ran the Minds in The Culture novels?

Listening to the audio book "Consider Phlebas" by Iain M. Banks. It's just so good. And relevant.
If you haven't read it? Now is a great time. It's not like what a lot of people suggest... eg reading about dictatorships the dynamic is very different, but there are parallels to current political fault lines. And it's a hopeful book--
If you have read it? It's better the second time. I missed so many little things!
Iain M. Banks was taken from us too soon. #scienceFiction #ianMBanks #books #SF

Reading #HouseOfOpenWounds by #AdrianTchaikovsky - I loved the #ChildrenOfTime series but this has turned me into a real fan. The guy is like what #TerryPratchett and #IanMBanks would have created if they had had a child

Got the Iain Banks drawings book as a gift and it’s really incredibly charming just how much it resembles an 80s teenagers notes on their Traveller campaign. #sciencefiction #ianmbanks

Right now I'm considering the idea of using 'e' to denote a single person pronoun, and 'ey' / 'em' to pluralize, so that everything is in this kind of weird undermining of the language. I could go a step further and change a few more things!
Although, I have to be careful not to get too far into
#FeersumEndjinn territory: as much as I like #IanMBanks as a writer, too many people seem to think that was borderline unreadable, and I'd rather be easy to read... -
A #StitchedPanorama #photo of a #SpaceX #Falcon9 #rocket core, #booster #B1061. This #photograph was taken after it returned to #PortCanaveral on its #barge #OfCourseIStillLoveYou, named after the #IanMBanks “Culture” series ship names, after launching a group of #Starlink #satellites to #orbit.
The booster is charred heavily, and it is slightly difficult to make out out the red #NASAworm logo in the middle of the body.

@IainMac9 @bookstodon I always preferred his #ianmbanks. The Wasp Factory was one of those OMG moments in my reading career.

Just #read #IanMBanks #Inversions. Wow, so good I immediately went back and read it again to pick up more of the subtle correspondences between the tales. Fascinating and deep #Culture novel concealed as mediaeval fiction. Reviews are Marmite here and you can see why - no space opera (apart from maybe the rocks) but plenty of philosophy. Wow.

@evan Rest in peace #IanMBanks … his worlds well worth a revisit in 2023

hehe, it's from when I did my degree in #Sociology, #Film and #AmericanStudies. I wedged #StarTrek in everywhere I could!
Also, growing up on Trek was a gateway to me becoming an actual #Marxist in my teens as both posit a future utopia. The beloved #FullLuxuryQueerSpaceCommunism that you also find in #IanMBanks #CultureNovels

@eric
I suppose that depends on which parts of #IanMBanks' #TheCulture you enjoyed and are looking for more of. I would start by recommending Becky Chambers' Wayfarers and Martha Wells' Murderbot. Neither are quite the same, but both are very enjoyable in their own right with similarities to Banks' work.

I made a remark about baby goats and now I'm thinking about the internalisation of oppression, the panopticon and how capitalism hobbles our very souls. Again.
Once we have #FullLuxuryQueerSpaceCommunism, once we have Banks' #Culture, once ALL HUMANS EVERYWHERE are truly free, these times will be seen as little better than feudalism.
#ACAB applies to our Inner Cop too.

@steveh When skeuomorphs roamed the earth…
(I can’t help being reminded of Iain M. Banks’ “Feersum Endjinn”)

I just finished book one of #TheCultureSeries, #ConsiderPhlebas by #IanMBanks and now I've started #ChildrenOfTime by #AdrianTchaikovsky.
I'm still evaluating Consider Phlebas. It's amazing world building & a rather intense plot, but it kinda lacks both philo & psycho depth IMHO. (The ending, though, is heart-rending to me.) But I do have book 2 coming and will continue the series.
Children of Time is starting out very interesting. Perhaps a bit more my taste. We'll see.

#books #IanMBanks, needs no Checkov's Gun. #Exzession: Ultimately no device or character truly mattered beyond their immediate horizon. All control turned out to be an illusion. Collectively though... chaotic interaction writes it's own story.
-
@bookstodon I really need to read more of The Culture series. I've only read Consider Phlebas and absolutely loved it. What's a good next book in the series? I've heard good things about The Use of Weapons.

@albinokid Oooo, lots of overlap on our lists! Some of my faves I'd add would be #IanMBanks #MercedesLackey #SamuelRDelaney #CliveBarker #VirginiaWoolf

Oh yeah, that #dream. Odd how many people have that one.
