If you haven't read it? Now is a great time. It's not like what a lot of people suggest... eg reading about dictatorships the dynamic is very different, but there are parallels to current political fault lines.And it's a hopeful book--

I'm re-reading Use of Weapons, and trying to figure out how I would cast Zakalwe. The best I've come up with so far is Hiddleston at the start and Clive Owen at the end.
You need someone who can embody the joy of effortless brilliance, and a slightly dopey charm, and then slowly peel it away to show some very profound damage.

Finished "Consider Phlebas" the other day, and I understand it isn't exactly representative of the rest of the #Culture series. Felt like it really dragged at times and took a long time to get anywhere. Still it was interesting to see the Culture-Idrian war from the perspective of one of the "bad" guys. I think I will give the next book a try. #Bookstodon #IanMBanks

Right now I'm considering the idea of using 'e' to denote a single person pronoun, and 'ey' / 'em' to pluralize, so that everything is in this kind of weird undermining of the language. I could go a step further and change a few more things!
Although, I have to be careful not to get too far into
#FeersumEndjinn territory: as much as I like #IanMBanks as a writer, too many people seem to think that was borderline unreadable, and I'd rather be easy to read... -

We are personally frustrated that a “self-consciously rational society” is portrayed so negatively where even the sentient AI are more human than the people themselves. Even the enemy warrior race of aliens are portrayed as more human despite being very non-humanoid. @IainMac9 @bookstodon I always preferred his #ianmbanks. The Wasp Factory was one of those OMG moments in my reading career.

Just #read #IanMBanks #Inversions. Wow, so good I immediately went back and read it again to pick up more of the subtle correspondences between the tales. Fascinating and deep #Culture novel concealed as mediaeval fiction. Reviews are Marmite here and you can see why - no space opera (apart from maybe the rocks) but plenty of philosophy. Wow.
