I bought my domains through a Lithuanian registrar, but that alone is not enough. What also matters is who operates the top-level domain. ".org", for example, is controlled by a US-based registry and therefore subject to US sanctions.
Could something similar happen to privacy-oriented services such as ProtonMail? In principle, yes: "protonmail.com" depends on the US-operated ".com" registry. By contrast, "pm.me" and "proton.me" use Montenegro’s country-code domain - not everyone using their service has the ".me" emails.
European hosting does not necessarily mean European digital sovereignty. We remain extraordinarily vulnerable to foreign control over critical internet infrastructure.

Just scraping the #IANA assigned TLDs and the corresponding documented #nameservers. What I don't get is, why so many companies apply for a #TLD. It's not particularly cheap to apply for one of those ngTLDs, yet compared to the company sizes, it's probably pennies. Is it a prestige investment? Is it a digital resource to grab, before someone else does it?
Other than #Microsoft, #Google, and #AWS, I've rarely seen any ngTLD representing a corporation's name to actually be used in practice.
Does anyone in the #infosec community share their view?
