  1. There are two ultimate fears, the annihilation of solitude and the annihilation of the crowd. We lose our identities if we are alone with no one to reflect us back on ourselves... or we lose our identities if we are in a mass of others; anonymous, corporate, overwhelmed by the babble.

  6. Seperated By Space & Time

Several years ago I randomly discovered these two images, one a photo from 1973, the other a painting from around 2009. I was struck by the similarity of the two men separated by space + time!

The photograph of the young man leaning against a houseboat was taken by UK Photographer lan McDonald in Middlesbrough.

The painting is by Martha's Vineyard resident Heather Neill. Titled The Bogcutter it is a portrait of the artist's son!

The wall on which the prophets wrote
    Is cracking at the seams
    Upon the instruments of death
    The sunlight brightly gleams
When every man is torn apart
    With nightmares and with dreams
Will no one lay the laurel wreath
    When silence drowns the screams?

    Confusion will be my epitaph
As I crawl, a cracked and broken path
If we make it, we can all sit back and laugh
But I fear tomorrow I'll be crying
Yes, I fear tomorrow I'll be crying
Yes, I fear tomorrow I'll be crying

Between the iron gates of fate
The seeds of time were sown
And watered by the deeds of those
Who know and who are known
    Knowledge is a deadly friend
If no one sets the rules
The fate of all mankind, I see
Is in the hands of fools

The wall on which the prophets wrote
    Is cracking at the seams
    Upon the instruments of death
    The sunlight brightly gleams
When every man is torn apart
    With nightmares and with dreams
Will no one lay the laurel wreath
    When silence drowns the screams?

But I fear tomorrow I'll be crying
Yes, I fear tomorrow I'll be crying
Yes, I fear tomorrow I'll be crying
    Crying
    Crying
Yes, I fear tomorrow I'll be crying
Yes, I fear tomorrow I'll be crying
Yes, I fear tomorrow I'll be crying

  13. I just had my mind well and truly blown. I'm reading Ian McDonald's latest novel, Hopeland, and about a fifth of the way through he introduces the Music, a machine to play a piece of music that will take a thousand years to complete.

It's like the Long Now Foundation's long clock in a way, but McDonald's conception is more evocative and his description in the book is stunning in its beauty and power. It's the most striking thing I've read in a decade.

    V. Hopeland by #IanMcDonald

Seriously what the *fuck* is this amazing, uncategorizable, unsummarizable, weird, sprawling, hairball of a novel? How the *hell* do you research – much less *write* – a novel this ambitious and wide-ranging? Why did I find myself weeping uncontrollably on a train yesterday as I finished it, literally squeezing my chest over my heart as it broke and sang at the same moment? The stars of *Hopeland* are members of two ancient, secret societies.

  17. Have you ever read a novel that was so *good* you almost felt *angry* at it? I mean, maybe that's just me, but there is one author who consistently triggers my literary pleasure centers so hard that I get spillover into all my other senses, and that's #IanMcDonald, who has a new novel out: *Hopeland*:
