  1. Do I know anyone who dabbles in secure decentralised/p2p protocols (MLS, hypercore… hell even activitypub)…

    Someone who would potentially be willing to entertain a few stupid questions from a noob…

  3. 📰 Oh, look! A 12-minute read on how #TimescaleDB compresses data, because obviously, everyone has time to delve into the wonders of #Hypercore and Columnar Storage. 🤔 But hey, if watching paint dry isn't your style, imagine the thrill of squeezing data "up to 98" – whatever that means! 🙄

  7. P2P в РФ: почему нужна система, а не протокол

    Важное уведомление Данная статья носит исключительно информационный и исследовательский характер. Все приведённые материалы предназначены для обсуждения архитектуры распределённых систем, образовательных целей и анализа технологий повышения устойчивости P2P-сетей к цензуре. Автор не распространяет готовые средства обхода блокировок и не призывает к их использованию. Любые практические реализации, описанные в статье, являются гипотетическими и требуют от пользователя самостоятельной оценки соответствия законодательству своей страны. Ответственность за применение полученных знаний лежит исключительно на пользователе. Возможно, ни одна из описанных технологий не нова. Но их сочетание — с учётом российских реалий (CGNAT, DPI, белые списки) — представляет собой, насколько я вижу, ещё не реализованный на практике open-source проект. Приглашаю сообщество проверить эту гипотезу вместе.

    > to stabilize p2p primitives before they get open sourced

    This one would be more convincing ... If it wasn't for the fact that Keet is based on Pear, which is already published;

    github.com/holepunchto/pear

    Pear is in turn based on HyperCore/ DAT, which is too;

    github.com/holepunchto/hyperco

    Hypercore is part of DAT which is a documented open protocol;

    dat.foundation/about/foundatio

    So the "primitives" are already out there.

  10. Why the #OMN works with #ActivityPub – And why we need a bridge to #p2p

    Let's look at this. #ActivityPub is not a product. It’s not even really a “protocol” in the narrow, rigid sense that vertical tech likes to imagine. ActivityPub is a shared vocabulary, a public language for moving meaning and connection across the #openweb. It gives you nouns and verbs, and the community defines the grammar through lived use. This is why the #OMN works with ActivityPub, a metadata and meaning layer, not a platform, flows, not silos. ActivityPub is the widely deployed […]

  11. Tried out the new #bare runtime on Android. Sadly I'm running into issues getting their native modules to load. Apparently there was a fix a few weeks ago but maybe I'm still missing some sort of update in the stack. 🤷 Hopefully I can get it working and get #hypercore into #agregore mobile before localfirstconf next month.

  13. Made a demo getting #hypercore working in the latest stable #Godot release and I'm really happy with how the API is looking so far.

    Next I'll mess more with getting hyper-sdk to run on the Bare runtime so I can get it into @agregore on Android

  15. Agregore 2.7.0 - Settings Page
    => agregore.mauve.moe
    A minimal web browser for the distributed web
    - Enable people to make and use local first apps using the web
    - Be minimal (fewer built-in features, leave more to the OS)
    - Be open to anything p2p / decentralized / local-first
    - Rely on web extensions for extra functionality
    - Work with mesh networks / Bluetooth Low Energy networks

  16. For anyone curious, here's the code. It uses the new "Node SEA" method for single executible binaries but with some hacks to get native modules bundled statically and getting it to work with #hypercore This will be the foundation of the new version of HyperGodot.

  18. For anyone in #ottawa that's interested in #LocalFirst tech or #LLM / #AI tech, I'll be presenting about how user agents can enable web applications to do AI stuff while leaving control over the model and data to users. I'll be demoing how we do it in @agregore with an example app that generates web apps using your local LLM and publishes to #Hypercore

  21. Does #Holepunch have any plans to add recording capabilities to #Keet?

    It strikes me that this epic feat of #p2p engineering that far outperforms any centralized #VideoConferencing would be the workshop facilitator & remote team manager's perfect tool; if only there was an option to retain streams on disk for later broadcast, transcription etc.

    It also strikes me that #Hypercore is tailored to do exactly this kind of stream handling.

  22. We've got a new version (v2.5.0) out which improves the look and feel along with fixes for the #Hypercore / #Holepunch protocol handlers.

  24. Have any #p2p people used #Keet ? Built on on #Hypercore. Looking for a good hole punching implementation and i was told this was a good one. I just tried it out between my laptop (behind university firewall/NAT) and cell phone (on mobile network), and I had one issue connecting, but after an update was able to connect in both directions no problem. No login, no account, no phone number, and allegedly e2e without needing a public server to coordinate the holepunch. need to check out how that's implemented. if this checks out i'm like damn this might be better than Signal (which i love)

    edit: link to app page keet.io/ and (minimal) docs docs.holepunch.to/apps/keet.io

  26. Tangentially related to tonight's unhinged tooting about #hypercore and #ipfs I put together a scrappy guide on how to set up your own Distributed Press instance, problems and all:

  30. Anyone got a #bluesky invite knocking around? I signed up on the first day sign-ups were opened, 'cause I'd tried #ssb & a lot of the #hypercore stuff; but I've still not had an invite

    My attempts to self-host a PDS didn't get very far, quite a lot of moving parts and not a lot of documentation (which is fair, it is still in beta)

    Wonder if it's cause I used my self-hosted email..? 😢 #bsky

  33. Hey folks! The 2.0.0 release of #Agregore has been tagged and compiled! This features fixes for #MacOS, an upgraded #Hypercore-Protocol, and better support for #Gemini when loading it from #p2p protocols. This also involves an upgrade of Electron to 23 and an overhaul to using ESM for the #JavaScript back ends.

    Download it and check it out for yourself!

  35. First, I'm going to create a new #hypercore based website. This used to be called #dat and I think is now called holepunch.to (all very hard to search for :P ).

    You can find the docs for the protocol handlers here: github.com/RangerMauve/hyperco

  37. Just loaded my first #p2p site published to the new version of distributed.press with proper #ipfs #hypercore and #dnslink support!

    The DNSLink stuff is a bit iffy for hypercore, but I'll be fixing that up tomorrow.

    Now stuff can be published via Distributed Press, and viewed via @agregore

    What's cool is that in addition to keeping your content online, you can easily configure it to set up DNS keys for you by delegating with an NS DNS entry for the `_dnslink` subdomain on your domain.
