  1. Today's Useless Error Message of the Day™ is brought to you by Synology who should know better. From their Hyper Backup app: "Failed to backup applications."

That's it. I have to guess which app and why. It turns out that I removed the VPN app yesterday, which Hyper Backup knew when I checked what it was backing up. It told me VPN was invalid. So WTF didn't it put that important piece of information in the logs?!

Man some major companies sure hire lazy programmers.

  3. Had to ditch VersityGW and go back to Garage to get my Dad's Synology NAS to use it as a S3 backup target.

It would auth and find the bucket, but not move on from there.

Luckily I was planning to use Garage on the real remote target, but was trying out VersityGW on my "Snowball"

  7. @Diogenes #HyperBackup is awesome! Depending on the size of the backup, and the NAS model it could take time, but it will do the job.

  9. @tsherrygeo Manually via #HyperBackup, or not at all via any Syno package? Also, "Synology backup" means data on your NAS, or you want to backup "some" data onto the NAS itself?

Default HyperBackup with its GFS versioning should work out of the box with no issues. So the question really is what is your exact current setup that makes the backup not the most stable one?

  11. #Synology's #HyperBackup: "We got an I/O error on one file so we're going to abandon the entire backup and leave your data unprotected. You're welcome."

  12. Can't recall last time I needed a #backup restore but I guess working late has its consequences.

Editing files directly from the source is always a bad scenario and I avoid it, hence why I use a scratch drive.

But I managed to overwrite one file from the source by accident.

That feeling when you don't panic because you have a backup and you just say to yourself, "you idiot... -.-"

  14. In case you thought Arq Backup had useless error messages, I bring you today's example from Synology Hyper Backup 4. There is no indication what caused this or what I'm supposed to do about it, therefore useless.

  19. #Synology #BeeProtect is the new #cloud #backup platform specifically designed for the #BeeStation lineup.

$74.99/y for unlimited storage (4TB or more for the upcoming models) is a nice deal.

Part of the new #BSM 1.2 currently in beta!

  21. Managed to utilize #Synology #BeeStation as a fully working #HyperBackup destination for another #Synology #DSM #NAS (article on blackvoid.club soon)

Now it makes more sense to get one in case cheap J models get the axe. As a second or 3rd #backup destination it can become a valuable asset.

Restore per file or reconstruction of the entire HBK archive works (including multi-version one) with no issues.

    P.S. 24h till the #BLACKFRIDAY2024 #giveaway starts ;). The prize? 4TB #BeeStation

  23. #Synology data migration for a client in progress...

New #DS1522plus with #NVMe usable volume, and 5x #HAT3300 for the “slow" storage space.

Trusty #DS414 will become a backup remote unit.

#HyperBackup with #rsync (single-file) will provide the fastest network transfer with the security of all data copied correctly.

  25. This is weird. My uses to a remote Synology NAS. Sometimes there are connection issues and I just retry. But for the last two days no luck.

Weird thing is the moment I try to do a backup it says it can't connect. But when I do an integrity check that runs fine. Only way to do that if it can actually connect to the remote NAS.

Network hasn't changed on either ends. Anyone got a clue what could be the cause of this? The logging doesn't say anything else but con error.

In beiden Fällen zeigte FritzBox gut ausgelasteten Download fast durchgängig an.

#Synology #HyperBackup Vermutlich beim Restore prinzipbedingt langsam und schwankend weil Dateien versioniert in vielen kleinen Dateiblöcken verwaltet werden?! Verschlüsselung kommt noch dazu

  31. 1,82 TB sind nun fertig hochgeladen. Vom 17.03.

  35. Checking on my #BackBlaze backups - critical documents, email, databases. Managed through #HyperBackup on #Synology. Costing about $0.50 per year

  36. Nightly backup was running fine. 20mins for incrementally backing up 460 GB.

I will migrate Arqbackups over to Hetzner and give it all a try for a week before deleting the Wasabi buckets.

  38. After playing around a bit the Synology NAS #Hyperbackup created the first #backup on #Hetzner #StorageBox.

    - via WebDAV
    - 5 hours
    - 460 GB encrypted, compressed
    - takes up 380 GB

Have #Hyperbackup pushing encrypted nightly incrementals to #backblaze

  41. As expected, the #Synology #DSM version did not downgrade with #HyperBackup bare metal process.

The restore was successful, but several default apps are currently stuck because they are from the actual backup archive and not compatible with the new DSM 7.2.1. Manual update of each package resolved the issue.

All in all, bare metal restore will work fine in all cases but Synology still doesn’t offer DSM downgrade via this method!

  43. Testing #Synology #HyperBackup bare metal restore after the #DSM72 7.2.1 upgrade. Lets see if the OS will be downgraded to 7.2.0 as indicated in the summary.

The only issue is that this process is soooooo slow compared to #ActiveBackupForBusiness, so it will take about 1-2h for it to complete. Let's see what will happen.

My money is that it will be 7.2.1 (no DSM downgrade) with data from the actual backup archive.

  45. #DSM72 update in progress. Let's see if #WireGuard package will continue to work and just how well #HyperBackup bare metal restore will behave when moving from an updated version to a lower one (if possible at all).

  47. Working on the next part of this #Synology #RS2423+ review. Coming soon…

    PART 2: #Backup and restore.

Focusing on 3 major tools (#HyperBackup, #ActiveBackupForBusiness and #SnapshotReplication) in both client and server role.

Taking a look at the new full system backup option that HB now offers as well as #ESXI #VM backup over #ABB
