Fahr’n fahr’n, fahr’n auf der Autobahn
So, es geht weiter.
Wer sich fragt, was wir in der letzten Woche gemacht haben:
Das Grundgerüst für die neue Front-Veranda an Rebeccas und Matts Haus steht. Das Decking werden die beiden allein erledigen.
Nach einer vollen Woche in Denman sind Monika und ich heute Morgen dort aufgebrochen. Natürlich fiel der Abschied von Rebecca, Matt und besonders von Meredith wieder sehr schwer. Die Zeit ist wie im Flug vergangen. Am Donnerstag werden wir von Sydney aus den Rückflug antreten. Bis dahin wollen wir noch zwei halbe und einen ganzen Tag in der Stadt verbringen.
Die Fahrt von Denman nach Sydney dauerte einschließlich einer Kaffeepause ziemlich genau vier Stunden und verlief völlig problemlos. Um den Stress der Fahrt durch die Innenstadt zu sparen, haben wir in Sydney eine Mautstraße genutzt, die uns weitgehend über Tunnel im Stadtgebiet zu unserem Ziel, dem Flughafen gebracht hat.
Dort haben wir dann den Mietwagen abgegeben, denn den benötigen wir hier nicht mehr. Das System der öffentlichen Verkehrsmittel ist hervorragend ausgebaut und recht preisgünstig. Der freundliche Herr bei der AVIS Rückgabestation hat uns dann sogar noch den Tipp gegeben, nicht mit dem recht teuren Airtrain vom Flughafen in die Stadt zu fahren, sondern direkt an der Rückgabestation in einen Bus einzusteigen, eine Station bis zum Bahnhof in Mascot zu fahren und von dort aus einen regulären Zug zum Hauptbahnhof zu nutzen. Das hat hervorragend geklappt, war deutlich günstiger und gefühlt sogar schneller als der Airtrain.
So konnten wir kurz vor 14:00 Uhr bereits in unserem Hotel einchecken.
Dort haben wir uns aber nicht lange aufgehalten, sondern uns gleich wieder auf den Weg gemacht, weil für heute noch eine Besichtigung der Hyde Park Barracks auf dem Programm stand.
Wir entern also direkt vor dem Hotel die uns bereits bestens bekannte Tram und fahren erst einmal zum Circular Quay.
Von dort aus gehen wir zu Fuß etwa einen Kilometer zu den Hyde Park Barracks.
Bei den Barracks handelt es sich um das zentrale Gebäude, in dem die ersten Straffälligen (Convicts) untergebracht waren, die von England aus als Strafmaßnahme nach Australien verschifft wurden. Sie mussten hier unter weitgehend unwürdigsten Bedingungen leben und arbeiten und haben so mehr oder weniger freiwillig einen entscheidenden Beitrag zur Kolonialisierung Australiens beigetragen.
Schlafsaal für fast 80 Convicts in Hängematten. Weitere 80 Männer mussten unter den Hängematte auf dem Boden schlafen.Der Eintritt zur Ausstellung ist frei und es gibt Audio-Guides in mehreren Sprachen, darunter auch in deutscher Sprache.
Die Ausstellung behandelt das Thema der Convicts sehr gründlich. Es findet eine deutliche historische Einordnung und durchaus kritische Auseinandersetzung mit dem Thema statt. In der Ausstellung kommt auch einmal mehr das Thema der räuberischen Landnahme zur Sprache. Dort wird ganz klar zum Ausdruck gebracht, dass der verantwortliche Gouverneur Macquarie keinerlei Ahnung von der Kultur und den Gepflogenheiten der australischen Ureinwohner hatte und das Thema mit imperialistischer Arroganz gehandhabt hat. Die Verbrechen an der australischen Urbevölkerung werden auch als solche benannt.
Die Darstellung in der Führung über den Audio-Guide geschehen oft auch aus Sicht der Beteiligten. Teilweise sind die Schilderungen, die zu hören sind, kaum zu ertragen.
Nachhaltig von der Ausstellung beeindruckt verlassen wir die Barracks wieder. Ein kurzes Stück weiter fällt uns eine imposante Kirche auf, die wir dann auch besuchen.
In diesem Teil der Stadt sind wir noch nicht unterwegs gewesen, und so war uns die St. Mary’s Cathedrale noch nicht bekannt. Wir betreten die Kathedrale durch eine Seitentür und erst im Innern wird uns das gewaltige Ausmaß der Kirche deutlich.
Nachdem wir die Kirche durch das Hauptportal verlassen haben, können wir auch noch einen Blick auf die vordere Fassade werfen.
Letzte Station für heute soll dann der Fischmarkt sein, in dem wir auch zu Abend essen wollen. Hier sind wir vor zwei Jahren an unserem letzten Tag auch schon gewesen. Wir fahren mit dem Bus dorthin. Als wir allerdings vor dem Gebäude stehen, verwehrt uns ein Bauzaun den Zutritt und es sieht auch nicht mehr besonders einladend aus. Nebenan fällt uns dann ein nagelneues Gebäude auf und wir stellen fest, dass der Fischmarkt innerhalb der letzten zwei Jahre offensichtlich in ein neues Gebäude umgezogen ist.
Vor Schreck haben wir gar kein Foto gemacht, aber einen Eindruck vom neuen Gebäude gibt es auf der Internetseite des Fischmarkts.
In einem der zahlreichen Fischimbisse dort essen wir ein äußerst leckeres Abendessen und kehren dann mit der Tram ins Hotel zurück.
Für morgen haben wir – sofern es das Wetter zulässt – noch einmal eine Wanderung entlang der Küste geplant. Also freut euch auf den morgigen Bericht!

“Commissioned by Governor Lachlan Macquarie and built with convict labour, Hyde Park Barracks was the first convict barracks in the colony. Previously, convicts had been allowed to find their own accommodation, but by housing them in a barracks Macquarie hoped to increase their productivity and improve their moral character.
