Indie authors are changing the publishing industry. It's a statement we have been making for well over a decade, and from time to time you will hear publishers on panels hint as much. But now the Association of American Literary Agents has acknowledged as much in writing in the 2026 revision to its delightfully named Canon of Ethics.

@cyberhuman Hi, Leo! The thing to remember is that agents and traditional publishers are not just looking for great material, but for an author to already have a large platform. They're not just buying your book but also whoever you know they can sell it to. They are very risk averse. So in the case of first-time authors, I often recommend looking into #HybridPublishing. Those publishers are much more open to new authors and you don't need an agent to submit. Hit me up if you have questions. :)
