  1. My newest #Prelights article highlights a #preprint by B. R. Baisla et al. (2025) and their search for morphological #prezygotic #barriers to reduce #hybridization among the species complex of #Nasonia, #parasitoid wasps. Male genital morphology apparently does not prevent hybridization, pre-mating #barriers are still unknown.

  3. So it should be noted that a new definition is needed — NeanderthaL is asking for it.
    and

And not only him: consider the rare cases of fertile mules, rare but not conceptually marginal.

In the published document an extreme case is mentioned: an unicorn.
Suppose it is born among horses — could donkeys inherit it too?
    And zebras?

    What do you think?

  5. Against my better judgement I ordered a tayberry, a hybrid of blackberry and raspberry created in 1979 near the Tay River in Scotland. Tried an ice cream with this flavor a few years ago and it tasted exactly like Pepto-Bismol. Giving it a second chance. #tayberry #berries #fruit #garden #gardening #rubus #blackberry #raspberry #hybridization

  7. Shao et al. investigate hybrid incompatibilities in Caenorhabditis species, finding that F1 female hybrids show dominant C. nigoni haplotype expression. Mitochondrial expression patterns suggest nuclear–cytoplasmic incompatibility.

"numerous small-effect factors on a single chromosome can appear as spurious large-effect loci. This mapping artifact persists even for large samples and dense markers and may cause underreporting of polygenicity from genetic crosses."

  25. A new preprint by Hilde Schneeman and John Welch using FGM to explore what we can infer from introgression line data. Quite a lot of overdominance in the reanalysed datasets, but it may well be transient (background dependent) and thus fixable. Again, an important read for anyone interested in hybridization. #PopGen #Hybridization

  32. I'm looking for the first use of the phrase "introgressive hybridization". So far, this is the earliest I've found:
Anderson, E., & Hubricht, L. (1938). Hybridization in Tradescantia. III. The evidence for introgressive hybridization. American Journal of Botany, 396-402.

And also, how consistently people are currently using the phrase.
