Happy solstice, everyone!
This flower, Hyacinthus orientalis, is suitable from a Nordic perspective, because we use it indoors this time of year, and then it can be replanted outdoors, to bloom again in the summer.
Photo by me, taken in June.

#Hyacinthus orientalis 'Aqua', Markglory CV, 2005. I forced this big pot in the fridge this year, and it did bloom pretty well. I should have anticipated the flop and made a cage for them or something. They smell wonderful.

In the 19th century, the popularity of Graeco-Roman myths was still going strong. This is a 19th century painting of #Apollon, catching his lover #Hyakinthos who has been hit fatally by the discus they played with. It can be seen lying on the ground. Apollon is identified by a quiver of arrows on his back.
The scene is tender and incredibly sad. I like to think Apollon and the Muses inspired it.🎨 La mort d'Hyacinthe (The Death of #Hyacinthus), by Jean Broc, dated 1801

Bees have been very enthusiastic about the Roman hyacinths! This is very good because the garden has little else in bloom for them at present. Hopefully that will change soon with the warming temperatures.

I just saw that the #Wikipedia entry for #Hyacinthus opens by calling him “gentle and clever”, and my opinion as a professional classicist is that Hyacinthus wrote that.
