Moku == district, and many additional meanings! Listen to this one, the host really gets an early start, jumping in just as the theme jingle begins so she can get all the vocabulary goodness into the allotted 30 seconds! :blobcatthumbsup: #hwotd #hawaiianWordOfTheDay #district #HPR #HawaiianPublicRadio #LeilaniPoliʻahu #hawaiian https://www.hawaiipublicradio.org/hawaiian-word-of-the-day-april-30th

Kāhea == to call out. The blurb on the website still says that the host spells each word, but for the last week or so she hasn’t been… I think it’s great that she can change things up a bit! She is still clearly indicating where the kahakō belongs by mentioning the stressed syllables. #hwotd #hawaiianWordOfTheDay #callOut #HPR #HawaiianPublicRadio #LeilaniPoliʻahu #hawaiian

I was reading a children’s book about Passover yesterday that reminded me that “firstborn child” is an important concept in many cultures. In English we don’t have a special word for “firstborn child” (yes, I’m apparently a snob about compound words like “firstborn”!) but in Hawaiian the word is “hiapo.” Wehewehe doesn’t give a derivation, but it doesn’t seem to be any kind of compound or borrowed word.

Hānau == to give birth. If you listen to the clip, you might wonder who or what is Kaʻimi Pono? The best I can tell from my internet search is that it was a Hawaiian small press that published books in the 1990’s. #hwotd #hawaiianWordOfTheDay #birth #HPR #HawaiianPublicRadio #LeilaniPoliʻahu #hawaiian

Hawaiian word of the day: kala == forgive. Example sentence: “e kala mai” == “forgive me.” I will take it as an exercise today to translate: “Forgiveness is not an occasional act, it is a constant attitude” - Martin Luther King Jr. #forgiveness #forgive #mlkjr #martinLutherKingJr #hwotd #hawaiianWordOfTheDay #OleloHawaii #LearnHawaiian #hawaiian
