Thank you for joining us for Hurricane Preparedness Week! June 1st is the official start of the Atlantic Hurricane Season, but NOW is the time to get prepared. Don’t wait for a storm to approach -- by then it could be too late. #HurricanePrep #HurricaneStrong https://x.com/NWSAtlanta/status/2053233557812711516

Take action TODAY to be better prepared for when the worst happens. Even if you feel ready, there may be additional things you could do or learn. #HurricanePrep #HurricaneStrong http://noaa.gov/take-action-today #HurricanePrep https://x.com/NWSAtlanta/status/2053180702888206829

Hurricanes and tropical storms can cause widespread outages, and sometimes power can remain out for days. BUT you have the power to keep yourself and your loved ones safe by remembering these safety tips! #HurricanePrep #HurricaneStrong https://x.com/NWSAtlanta/status/2052818314334732450

After a hurricane or tropical storm has passed, that doesn't mean the danger is over. Even if the sun is out and the sky is blue, there could still be live powerlines down, hazards under the flood waters, and oppressive heat. #HurricanePrep #HurricaneStrong https://x.com/NWSAtlanta/status/2052765472156737892
-
A key part of hurricane preparedness is understanding the dangers that remain well after a storm. You can play a large role in how your neighbors fare before, during and after a hurricane. #HurricanePrep #HurricaneStrong http://noaa.gov/use-caution-after-storms https://x.com/NWSAtlanta/status/2052720177750683879

Before and during a disaster, being tech ready can help you have more than one way to receive critical and potentially life-saving weather information such as warnings. #HurricanePrep https://x.com/NWSAtlanta/status/2052455926704288147
-
Be prepared for hurricane season by knowing what to do during a storm. Whether you’ve evacuated or are sheltering in place, know what to expect from the hazards you may face. #HurricanePrep #HurricaneStrong http://noaa.gov/stay-protected-during-storms https://x.com/NWSAtlanta/status/2052403087155843128

Tornadoes can accompany landfalling tropical cyclones. These tornadoes typically occur in rain bands well away from the center of the storm. Be prepared, know your safe location, and be ready to act quickly if a tornado is approaching. #HurricanePrep #HurricaneStrong https://x.com/NWSAtlanta/status/2052153938531746230
-
If a Hurricane or Tropical Storm is threatening your area, always make sure that you’re up to date with the latest Watch and Warning information from your local NWS forecast office. #HurricanePrep #HurricaneStrong https://x.com/NWSAtlanta/status/2052070888959291429
-
Do you know what to do when a storm threatens? Prepare for hurricane season by taking the time now to understand the actions needed when time is of the essence. #HurricanePrep #HurricaneStrong http://noaa.gov/get-moving-when-storm-threatens https://x.com/NWSAtlanta/status/2051995396139110417
-
Even far away from the coast, heavy rainfall can remain a major concern as a tropical system moves inland. Large, slow moving tropical storms or hurricanes (like Alberto 1994 or Harvey 2017) are the greatest threat to produce catastrophic flooding. #HurricanePrep #HurricaneStrong https://x.com/NWSAtlanta/status/2051738706113925412
-
Prepare for hurricane season by knowing how to understand forecasts. They can tell you a lot about what is expected, including the storm’s path, rainfall amounts, wind speeds, and more. #HurricanePrep #HurricaneStrong http://noaa.gov/understand-forecast-information https://x.com/NWSAtlanta/status/2051633011385356413

Tropical systems can develop and intensify quickly, leaving precious little time to prepare. Getting ready before the hurricane season could help save you precious time. #HurricanePrep https://www.youtube.com/shorts/MsoovfrXDQc https://x.com/NWSAtlanta/status/2051441743770329193

Having enough supplies to make it through a hurricane isn’t enough. You need plenty to make it through what could be a long recovery period too. Have enough non-perishable food, water and medicine to last each person in your family for a minimum of one week. #HurricanePrep https://x.com/NWSAtlanta/status/2051414060894396908
-
Can your home withstand a hurricane? Make sure it is up to local hurricane building code specifications. Remember, the garage door is the most vulnerable part of the home, so it must be able to withstand high winds. #HurricanePrep #HurricaneStrong https://x.com/NWSAtlanta/status/2051338563334361446
-
The best time to prepare for hurricanes is BEFORE hurricane season begins. Avoid having to rush through potentially life-saving preparations by waiting until it’s too late. #HurricanePrep #HurricaneStrong http://noaa.gov/prepare-before-hurricane-season https://x.com/NWSAtlanta/status/2051270619631939807

No two tropical systems are the same. While it is important to know how strong the winds in a storm will be, they can also threaten life and property with storm surge, flooding from heavy rainfall, and tornadoes embedded within the storm. #HurricanePrep #HurricaneStrong #gawx https://x.com/NWSAtlanta/status/2051044127337566570
-
The first step of preparing for hurricanes is to know your risk. Hurricanes are not just a coastal problem, so find out today what types of water and wind hazards could happen where YOU live #HurricanePrep #HurricaneStrong http://noaa.gov/know-your-risk-water-wind https://x.com/NWSAtlanta/status/2050968631312331240

I'll wait until FL is in the cone at 120h before I 👀👀.
>96h, Open 🌀 kit to audit & check propane
>72h, Organize the garage for the SUV
>48h, Acquire H20 & noted essentials
>36h, Freeze H20
>24h, Fuel vehicles & 5G can
>12h, Charge 🔋
>9h, Outside Prep
>6h, Lockdown
🌀 Kit is always checked in June, but we keep batteries separate. 96-48h is plenty of time to order from Amazon.
I don't have much outside prep to do other than seal the garage door if it's going to be a rainmaker.

Ah, the noble pursuit of reverse-engineering the syrupy secrets of a #breakfast chain 🤦♂️. When hurricane-prepping in Florida, why not risk a legal storm instead? Better hope Waffle House doesn't serve subpoenas with their hash browns. 🥞📜🍳

If you can pick it up, so can the wind. And the wind can throw it a lot harder and a lot farther than you ever could. All loose objects should be cleaned up and stored inside well before the storm approaches.
Put up your storm shutters, barricades, and/or sandbags now, today. Milton will apparently be pushing lots of rain ahead of it and conditions tomorrow may be difficult.
You will lose power. Try to keep your electronics plugged in as much as possible, so that when power does go out you will be fully charged. Make sure all your backup power supplies are fully charged. Test your generator/battery/solar fail over. Generator fuel supply secure?
Filling a bathtub with water is not a bad idea. If water does go out, you have an extra supply for flushing toilets or drinking (after boiling).
How am I going to boil water if the power is out? Too late to get one now, but a propane stove is helpful to have in your hurricane kit (along with a supply of propane). Once it is safe outside, you can boil water and have hot meals.

Putting together hurricane supplies doesn't have to be expensive. You probably have a lot of things you can use already on hand! For those items still needed, many can be purchased at a dollar store.
