Holy smokes.. just when we thought was pau. Nope. Hurricane Hone’s last gasp. The river overflowed into the neighbors yard. Residents across the river on Hoaka road were evacuated.
Police were checking in on our neighborhood and advising folks along the river to evacuate. Fortunately for us our house is post and pier and a bit higher up and not as vulnerable.
But yeah, one last deluge before this hurricane moves away..

Hilo soccer fields are FLOODED. So much so that Bayfront Highway in Hilo is closed right now. Those fields do fill up fast and can turn into a pond in no time flat. #Hawaii #HurricaneHone

Well actually the Waiakea river does know. It deposits eventually into the Wailoa Pond. It’s certainly flowing this morning.

From my friend Eva Naniole in Waimea..
“Hey DC. Hope you and your family are safe and dry! I figured you might want to see what’s happening on the other side. Crazy wind and rain since yesterday and the river is raging. I was getting blown around outside taking this video this morning! I think the wind is even stronger today. Anyway, stay safe!”
I couldn’t upload her video because Mastodon 🙄 but trust me, their river was raging!

Highway 11 at Kawa Flats in Kau is closed between the 57 to 61 mile areas. Roadways may close without notice, please drive with caution.
County Parks and Recreation has closed the Hilo Municipal Golf Course due to flooding and debris.
(I saw that Tex’s Drive In said they were closed today out of an abundance of caution. Our Sunday malasadas will have to wait)

Fortunately our power only went out once overnight and it was maybe only for a minute tops.
Still, that was enough to make me get up and groggily reset all the digital clocks in the house. I think the kitchen might be ahead a few minutes. I won’t change it lol.

4am Sunday Update- Tropical Storm Hone is now Hurricane Hone as it continues its lurch below our islands.
For us in upper Hilo it rained ALOT last night and thankfully no significant winds to speak of. Breezy but it could be a lot worse. Was expecting some flooding around the house but not too bad. It’s just really WET. #Hawaii #HurricaneHone
