We had a swarm in our yard today!
Called the Humboldt Beekeepers swarm list and foubd someone who came over lickety split and boxed them up. So far they're staying put. We have to close up their little door at dusk and she'll pick them up in the morning. And keep the dogs away.

People get the wrong idea when I relate my experience of living off-grid, miles away from other humans, deep in the wilderness of the mountains in Humboldt, California.
Somehow, it just doesn't click that no, there's no roads Trails, and things resembling road like passages cut by people with properties using their own tractors and excavators, sure. You dare not go anywhere farther than you wish to hike unless you bring a chainsaw with you; failure to do so means you might not be driving back after a couple of trees decide to fell themselves across the path.
Food, the mornings were fun and interesting. I would start by filling the firebox in my Stanley cooker with Doug fir, oak, and madrone. It takes a good 20 minutes or so before the kettle begins to billow steam, a few minutes after that it's boiling - during that time you've been grinding the coffee beans by hand with the big circular crank on the wall-mounted grinder. Then you pour the boiling water into the coffee press and turn your attention to breakfast sizzling away in the video below.
You'll probably need to add more wood to the firebox, it's not a very efficient stove the furnace in the main room, but it does burn hot enough to turn all that iron into a giant griddle - if you're really adventurous you can try to bake a cake in the oven. It's an art to keep the oven consistently at the desired temperature, and... that's part of the fun too.
So what else were you really going to do in the hour and a half it took to make breakfast? Next? We tend to the garden, then later we travel about bucking up logs and felling trees for the coming winter.

This week's delivery day is Thursday.
Order on our site and pick up this Thursday, 4-6 pm pickup at Urban Farm Oasis in Berkeley.We've got tons of great plants, comparable to the ones in the background image here (though no Velvet Lushers this year). If there's something on our main list, but not on our "available for delivery" list, it's probably because it's still too small or maybe all of those are getting past their prime. We're okay selling either in person, but we only like to deliver plants in their prime.
We're not sure how long we'll keep doing deliveries, since things are slowing down, so we're playing it by ear.
Note that we're having an on-site nursery sale this weekend, but sale prices don't apply to delivered plants.

Hi all, it's that time of year, especially if you're growing your own plants from seed. The earlier you can get rid of male plants, or isolate them if you're going to do some seed production or breeding experiments, the better.

A project I've been working on triggered me into thinking about #penguins. Not the paperbacks. Not the biscuits. The old-boots-tough, smartly-dressed flightless #birds of the southern oceans. I thought I'd paint a sheet of them to refamiliarize myself with their variety and loveliness.
🐧 This Chinstrap is this morning's quick splash from my #sketchbook just to work out colours and labels.
🐧 Me sketching the African penguins on the beach in South Africa, in 2007. Back when I had a decent head of hair.
🐧 There's an active breeding colony of #Humboldt penguins at London Zoo which we visited in 2013. Perhaps you've seen them?
🐧 Seeing endangered Yellow-Eyed penguins were one of the highlights of our trip to New Zealand in 2009.
If you don't love penguins, seek professional help!

KIT-Forscher erhält Deutschlands höchstdotierten internationalen #Forschungspreis: Unter den sieben ausgezeichneten Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftlern, denen gestern eine #Humboldt-Professur 2025 verliehen wurde, ist Professor Christopher Barner-Kowollik (2. v.l.). Der Chemiker und Materialwissenschaftler wechselte Anfang 2026 von der australischen Queensland University of Technology ans #KITKarlsruhe, wo er photochemische Prozesse erforscht.

Hey everyone, sorry for being so quiet. But, hey, our opening day for 2026 is this Friday, May 1st!
We'll be open 9-5 Tuesday-Sunday, closed Mondays.
Pics are from today! The plants are looking great, but most of them are not yet big enough to definitively show their sex. They're (almost) all grown from feminized seeds, so will be 99+% female. If you want to get an early start or want to be sure a particular variety doesn't sell out, we've got lots of plants. If you're not in a hurry or aren't picky about flavors, give them a week or so.
