What is left of ex-hurricane Humberto has been named Storm Amy (the first named storm of the season) by the UK Met Office.

The 12h UT GFS model run shows the track running further north, sparing Ireland from the strongest winds. It then tracks north of Shetland and northwards to the west of Finland.

Peak winds are expected to graze past the north of Ireland and up the west coast of Scotland starting midday on Friday. Winds will be blustery across much of the UK Friday and Saturday.

Tropical cyclones #Humberto and #Imelda are developing in the Atlantic off the coast of the United States.

These two nearby low-pressure systems are interacting and will merge, a phenomenon known as the Fujiwara effect, which occurs very rarely.

Last night the chinese satellite #HY-2C captured the two systems in a single swath of his #HSCAT instrument. Our team at @knmi retrieved the wind from these data, allowing us to observe the phenomenon.

Ex-Hurricane #Humberto will race across the N Atlantic and reach Ireland and UK on Friday, with the deepening extra-tropical low sporting a forecast central pressure of around 950mB or less over Scotland, before dissolving across Germany and Poland early next week.

Ireland will take the brunt with winds upto 100mph forecast.

#Humberto and #Imelda are so close to each other that their circulating winds cancel each other out in a calm “col” area in between them.

🇧🇲 #Bermuda needs to be on alert however as Imelda will likely cause flash flooding and damaging waves from Wednesday into Thursday.
