An interview by Drop Site News revealed that the blindfolded Palestinian seen in a viral photo, in which two female Israeli soldiers posed beside him, has been identified as 22-year-old Mahmoud Al-Drimli.

According to his family, Mahmoud disappeared on Nov. 2, 2024, while trying to return from southern Gaza to Gaza City. They said they had received no information about his whereabouts until they recognized him in the widely circulated image.

His mother, Aida Al-Drimli, told Drop Site News that the photograph brought overwhelming emotions, relief that her son was still alive, and heartbreak at seeing the condition he was being held in.

[Petition] Black & #Transgender Lives Lost to Medical Neglect: Demand Justice in MA Hospitals!

The Issue

"My name is And Steiner. I am a Queer, gender-diverse patient that has been hospitalized in Massachusetts' (MA) Department of Mental Health (#DMH) hospitals for four years because of severe suicidality with suicide attempts.

"During that time, I have endured three attempts by DMH to suddenly discharge me from treatment without appropriate support, a practice known as '#PatientDumping'. This usually occurs when insurance has denied coverage or a patient has become a legal liability and often proves deadly, as you will see in this petition.

"While under DMH’s care, I have learned of at least two cases of serious medical neglect, and one suspected, which resulted in patient deaths. #HaywoodEarl was a Black man who died 'a painful and untimely death' from medical neglect at #LemuelShattuck Hospital, according to an investigation by #DisabilityLawCenter. Disability Law Center also investigated the death of #CaSonyaKing (pictured), a Black woman who they concluded 'died needlessly' from being 'patient dumped" from a #PsychiatricHospital. It is suspected that #JeanBusch, a transgender patient at Lemuel Shattuck, died similarly. All minorities. All died needlessly.

"When I learned of their deaths I was affected deeply. I reported Jean's death to DMH Authority, Attorney General Campbell and Governor Maura Healey in Jan 2023.

"Despite being under no criminal investigation, as punishment for reporting Jean's death, I was illegally and forcibly transferred to a dangerous forensic ward with no due process. There I experience 15 months of relentless physical #assaults, as well as verbal and sexual #harassment, often directly related to my sexual orientation and #GenderIdentity."

Children in Indian‑occupied Kashmir are growing up amid militarization, psychological trauma, and repeated disruptions to education, leaving deep and lasting scars on their wellbeing. Clinical evidence and field reports show a sharp rise in anxiety, fear, and distress among young people, underscoring the urgent need for meaningful protection, accountability, and access to mental‑health and child‑rights mechanisms.

The Committee on the Rights of the Child opened its one hundredth session in Geneva from 12 to 30 January 2026 at a moment of profound concern for children worldwide. In his opening statement, Mahamane Cissé-Gouro, Director of the Human Rights Council and Treaty Mechanisms Division at the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, emphasized that the Committee was convening at an exceptionally difficult time for children’s rights. Across the globe, children are increasingly affected by violations of international humanitarian law and by growing challenges to their fundamental rights. At the same time, international support for human rights mechanisms is shrinking, while treaty bodies face unprecedented financial and political constraints. Against this backdrop, he stressed, the Committee’s work has never been more vital.

Sophie Kiladze, Chair of the Committee, described the one hundredth session as a truly remarkable milestone. Over more than 35 years, the Committee has reviewed hundreds of State party reports, issued thousands of recommendations, adopted 26 general comments, convened days of general discussion, conducted inquiries, adopted individual decisions, and organized numerous events promoting the child as a rights holder. Yet, despite these sustained efforts, Ms. Kiladze acknowledged that the suffering of millions of children remains beyond imagination. \

We all know that the question of children’s rights involves deep moral complexity. All children are born with equal moral worth and deserve an equal chance in life. Yet perfect equality is unattainable in practice, requiring societies to seek fair and humane alternatives that protect the most vulnerable. Nowhere is this challenge more visible than in situations of protracted armed conflict.

In this context, the plight of children in Indian occupied Kashmir demands urgent attention. The heavy military presence—estimated at approximately 900,000 Indian troops, number cited by internationally renowned Indian novelist Arundhati Roy—has profoundly altered the daily reality, perceptions, and psychological development of Kashmiri children. Many grow up in an atmosphere of constant fear: fear of midnight raids, warrantless searches, arbitrary detention of young boys under draconian laws such as the Public Safety Act and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, physical abuse of elders, and violations of the dignity and safety of women within their households. Such experiences leave lasting scars on young minds.

Armed conflict in Kashmir has affected all inhabitants of the valley, but its most severe consequences are borne by children. Exposure to violence fills young hearts with anger, frustration, and helplessness, depriving them of peace of mind. Health—one of the most valuable assets of childhood—is severely compromised, as many children suffer from anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder. The conflict has robbed them of a carefree childhood and imposed adult responsibilities far too early. Some children are placed in orphanages after losing their caretakers at the very moment when parental support is most crucial. Education, essential for the future development of any society, is repeatedly disrupted, producing long-term consequences for both individuals and the broader community.

Despite these hardships, the children of Kashmir possess immense qualities and capacities. What they urgently need are reliable and dependable educational spaces. No child’s education should be allowed to suffer because of insecurity, unpredictability, violence, or administrative neglect. Protecting education is a critical first step toward safeguarding Kashmir’s most valuable asset—its young minds—and ensuring that the next generation inherits not despair, but opportunity, learning, and hope.

Numerous credible Indian and international organizations have documented the psychological toll of conflict on Kashmiri children. In early May 2025, a team from the child psychiatry department at the Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (IMHANS), Kashmir, supported by UNICEF India, visited psychosocial mental health camps in Uri, Kashmir. Over two weeks, clinicians observed dozens of children exhibiting symptoms of panic, anxiety, insomnia, nightmares, irritability, and persistent fear of renewed violence. UNICEF has repeatedly warned that armed conflict is particularly traumatic for children and can result in long-term mental health consequences if left unaddressed.

Media and clinical reports corroborate these findings. Mumbai Mirror reported in September 2025 on a 16-year-old girl from Kupwara who presented with severe anxiety following shelling in her neighbourhood after the May 10, 2025, ceasefire between India and Pakistan. According to professionals at the Child Guidance and Wellbeing Centre in Srinagar—the only fully operational government facility dedicated to child and adolescent mental health in Kashmir—girls often present in greater numbers, as they tend to express distress more openly. Children as young as eleven have reported intense fear of being alone, even while using the washroom, due to constant exposure to violent imagery and war-related media.

Recent data further underscores the gravity of the crisis. The 2022–2023 annual report of the Child Guidance and Wellbeing Centre at IMHANS documents a sharp rise in mental health cases among children aged 0–18, with the highest number in the 7–14 age group. Moreover, the National Crime Records Bureau reported in December 2023 that Jammu and Kashmir recorded the highest number of attempted suicide cases in India in 2022, a deeply alarming indicator of widespread psychological distress.

As the Committee on the Rights of the Child commemorates its one hundredth session, this historic milestone must serve not only as a moment of reflection, but as a call to renewed moral and institutional responsibility. For the children of conflict-affected regions such as Kashmir, declarations, general comments, and recommendations—however valuable—remain hollow unless they translate into tangible protection, accountability, and relief on the ground.

The Committee is uniquely mandated to ensure that the Convention on the Rights of the Child is not reduced to an aspirational document but upheld as a living instrument of protection for children trapped in situations of prolonged occupation and armed conflict. The children of Kashmir continue to experience violations of their most basic rights: the right to life, the right to education, the right to physical and mental health, and the right to grow up free from fear and violence. These violations are neither isolated nor incidental; they are systemic, long-standing, and well-documented by credible national and international sources.

We therefore urge the Committee on the Rights of the Child  to: (a) give sustained and heightened attention to the situation of children in Jammu and Kashmir in its dialogue with the State party; (b) explicitly address the psychological trauma, disruption of education, arbitrary detention, and family separation affecting Kashmiri children in its concluding observations; (c) call for unrestricted access for independent child-protection and mental-health mechanisms, including UN agencies and humanitarian organizations; and (d) recommend concrete, time-bound measures to ensure compliance with the Convention and its Optional Protocols.

Children living under conflict cannot wait for political settlements to enjoy their rights. International law does not permit the suspension of childhood. If the Convention on the Rights of the Child is to retain its credibility and moral authority, it must speak most forcefully for those children who are least able to speak for themselves. The children of Kashmir are entitled not to sympathy alone, but to protection, justice, and a future free from fear.

CCG Report Warns Of Deepening Alienation And Silenced Voices In Kashmir

CCG finds Kashmir gripped by a climate of “sullen silence”

Washington, D.C. – It is an established fact that human rights are being violated on a daily basis across every part of Jammu and Kashmir. Multiple international human rights organizations and United Nations Special Rapporteurs have documented the absence of meaningful freedom of expression in Jammu and Kashmir. Independent civil society findings indicate widespread censorship, intimidation, arbitrary detention, and harassment of journalists, civil society members, religious leaders, and ordinary citizens. Speaking openly about developments in the region carries a high risk of detention under laws such as the Public Safety Act (PSA) and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).

Local Kashmiris continue to face humiliation, intimidation, and harassment at the hands of Indian military and paramilitary forces. These findings have been independently verified by a well-respected and reputable New Delhi–based organization, the Concerned Citizens Group (CCG). The CCG comprises prominent and distinguished Indian political leaders, retired senior military officials, and representatives of civil society.

The group visited Jammu and Kashmir from October 28 to 31, 2025, and subsequently released its 11th report on the region. Members of the delegation included Yashwant Sinha, former Minister of Finance and Minister of External Affairs of India; Sushobha Barve, Executive Director of the Centre for Dialogue and Reconciliation; Air Vice Marshal (Retd.) Kapil Kak, a Kashmiri by birth and former Deputy Director at the Centre for Air Power Studies; and Bharat Bhushan, one of India’s most seasoned journalists.

The CCG categorically emphasized that it has no affiliation with the Government of India or with any political party. Its visits to Jammu and Kashmir are entirely self-financed by its members, and it does not solicit contributions from any organization, including NGOs.

The CCG was formed in the aftermath of the large-scale protests that erupted in the Kashmir Valley in 2016. Its stated mission is to act as a bridge between Jammu and Kashmir and the rest of India. The primary objective of its recent visit was to gauge the public mood at the grassroots level and to convey to the wider Indian public the genuine sentiments of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.

According to the report, the activities of the CCG were significantly restricted by the police. The group sought to meet a broad cross-section of society to obtain an objective and accurate assessment of the prevailing situation but was prevented from doing so. In several instances, police reportedly instructed individuals not to appear before the CCG. Despite these constraints, the delegation managed to meet senior leadership of the National Conference, Indian National Congress, and the Communist Party of India (Marxist), as well as representatives of the Kashmir Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Jammu and Kashmir Students’ Association, and members of the media. Additionally, they met Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, a prominent Muslim religious leader, and Sanjay Ticku, a well-known Hindu leader.

The report describes a pervasive atmosphere of “sullen silence” in Kashmir, noting that “alienation has deepened” and that “resentment and anger against the Central government have increased.” It further concludes that the reality on the ground is “far removed from the narrative presented by the Government of India and its media outlets based in Delhi.”

Echoing findings of other international human rights organizations and UN Special Thematic Rapporteurs, the CCG report confirms the near-total absence of freedom of expression in Kashmir. The media remains muzzled, and reporting on alleged atrocities committed by Indian security forces is treated as a criminal offense, often leading to arrest and imprisonment. The report observes:

“There is a pervading fear of voicing any dissenting views or opinions among civil society members. Repression by the police is real and does not spare public intellectuals, media persons, or others.”

One prominent doctor told the delegation, “We have been silenced. But this eerie silence does not mean that all is well.” He warned that a “volcano of suppressed anger and frustration, bordering on hatred, could erupt at any time—it only needs a trigger.”

The report also documents testimonies from academics and civil society representatives who stated that Kashmiri identity is gradually being erased, that ordinary Kashmiris are routinely rebuked and abused, and that economic exploitation has intensified.

A particularly alarming assessment highlights that prolonged uncertainty has pushed many Kashmiri youth toward anger, alienation, substance abuse, and even radicalization—developments that are profoundly destructive to a society historically known for its cultural harmony and serenity. Reflecting this concern, a senior editor warned that “the silence of Kashmiri society is unsustainable. When it breaks, the consequences could be dangerous.” A political leader quoted in the report remarked ominously, “Kuch bada hone wala hai” (“Something big is going to happen”).

The report further documents blatant religious interference. Even Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, the Chief Imam of Kashmir, is reportedly denied the freedom to deliver sermons without prior police approval. Authorities allegedly demand advance submission of his khutbas and details of religious ceremonies he intends to officiate—an unmistakable intrusion into religious affairs.

A young professional summarized the prevailing governance structure starkly: “Kashmir is a colony of the Viceroy.” According to this account, the elected government is largely powerless, with no effective control over law and order, while real authority rests with the Lieutenant Governor appointed by New Delhi.

After extensive consultations, the CCG concludes that the people of Kashmir are experiencing a “deep sense of loss—of identity, sub-identity, dignity, and honour.” The report also details ongoing censorship, surveillance, intimidation, and harassment of media organizations. During Operation Sindoor, reporting became entirely state-controlled, severe restrictions were imposed on local journalism, and many reports filed by Kashmiri journalists were allegedly suppressed. Journalists are even denied access to report on legislative assembly proceedings due to the refusal of accreditation passes. Journalists face intimidation, harassment, and removal of reports critical of authorities. Reporting on alleged abuses by security forces is treated as a criminal offense.

In conclusion, these findings directly engage obligations under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) and merit continued attention by the UN Human Rights Council, Special Rapporteurs, and relevant UN mechanisms. Therefore, we demand the immediate release of all political prisoners and detainees held for peaceful expression, including Muhammad Yasin Malik, Shabir Ahmad Shah, Masarat Aalam, Khurram Parvez, Dr. Hameed, Fayaz, Aasia Andrabi, Sofi Fehmeeda, Nahida Nasreen and others; restore press freedom, guarantee freedom of expression, uphold freedom of assembly and association, end interference in religious practices and above all; guarantee of the right of self-determination of the people of Jammu and Kashmir so as  to live with dignity and honour.

The Global Sumud Flotilla said 29 more participants were released today, Sunday, and flown to Spain, according to the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The released activists include citizens of Spain, Portugal, and the Netherlands. So far, Greta Thunberg has not been released.

Flotilla members arriving in Turkey yesterday said they drank water from the toilet, women were imprisoned in dog cages, and they were woke up at night by snipers and German Shepherds, with
Israelis screaming, "We're going to shoot you." Their medicines were thrown away, Flotilla participants said in Istanbul upon arrival.

Greta Thunberg was treated the worst, and dragged by hair and abused. She remains in the violent Ktzi'ot prison in the Negev desert in Israel. Nelson Mandela's grandson is also imprisoned.

The first group of 137 from the Global Sumud Flotilla arrived in Turkey yesterday, and were greeted with bouquets of flowers in Instabul, most were Turkish and Malaysian. Malaysian activist Hajwani Helmi said, “It was unbearable — they treated us like animals,” said Helmi, adding that detainees were denied food, clean water, and medicine throughout their detention.
A 70-year-old Scottish woman, arriving in Turkey with a broken leg, said she was given no food or water in prison, and the guard slammed a metal door on her broken leg.

"That prison was awful," said Margaret Pacetta from Glasgow upon arrival at the airport in Turkey.

Another woman arriving in Turkey said mothers had written the names of their children in blood on the prison walls.

"They locked us in animal cages."

MONMOUTH — "After dozens of residents voiced opposition, the police department has withdrawn its application for the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement program that allows local law enforcement agencies to work with the federal agency to enforce federal immigration laws.

"Police Chief Paul Ferland said he was seeking the training so his officers would know what to do if they come across people who are in the United States illegally.

"In the past year or so, Monmouth officers have called the U.S. Border Patrol about a dozen times, each time with questions about legal rights, when to detain someone and how to not violate someone’s constitutional rights.

"Each instance can take hours, Ferland said, as officers wait for federal agents to arrive from wherever they are stationed. Once the agents arrive, they check for the person’s immigration status and whether they may have an upcoming court date. If not, the officers can issue a date.

"The southwest Kennebec County town is home to a number of businesses, including #agricultural businesses that employ #migrant workers.

"Ferland announced the department’s withdrawal from the program Wednesday at the town’s Board of Selectmen meeting, which was packed with residents both in person and on Zoom who turned out mostly to speak against the move.

"Because Ferland is also the chief of the Winthrop Police Department, that town is also withdrawing, he said.
" 'When I saw how this is dividing the community, it’s not what I want. It’s not what our officers want. Our community is our community, it’s our home. The officers love their community, and we are not here to divide it. That is one of the reasons why I pulled the application. Not the only, but the biggest,' Ferland said.

"Following an executive order signed by President Donald #Trump, police departments from 38 states have applied to be a part of ICE’s 287 (g) program, including the #WellsPoliceDepartment, which according to Immigrations and Customs Enforcement data is the only #Maine police agency that is currently taking part."
