On June 24, 2026, the ground shook in a way my home country has not experienced in more than a century. Two powerful earthquakes struck north-central Venezuela. It began with a magnitude 7.2 foreshock and was followed just 39 seconds later by a massive 7.5 mainshock along the San Sebastián fault system.

I try to think about the numbers but any attempt quickly dissolve into deep human pain. The official death toll has tragically climbed past 3300 people (it’s likely way more high), with over 16000 injured and tens of thousands missing or displaced, especially in heavily hit areas like La Guaira, Yaracuy, and parts of Caracas.
