Since Christianity turned out to be false, I would like a religion that focuses on being good people and making the world a better place. Unfortunately, it seems that every #religion includes (dubious at best) metaphysical claims. Even #UnitarianUniversalists claim that there is one God and everyone goes to heaven. OTOH, #Humanists seem to mandate #atheism. How can anyone know? I just want a group focused on doing good for its own sake that I can meet with regularly.

#Mastodon #News When i arrived here the 1st user i followed was @georgetakei
He is always present and very active and a beacon of #Humanity and #Decency in the mad #World we live in, where empathy and human values are considered, sadly by many, as secondary. The second one i tried to follow was #RobReiner and i had to deal with the fact that he was never active here.
Still i remember his posts on #Twitter; his late father ones as well.
Both #Humanists just for their empathy towards the less favored.#RIP #RobReiner #Democracy lost a warrior, History won a Hero.

#BookReview: “Separation of #Church and #Hate”
by Harry Foxwell#BOOK BY JOHN FUGELSANG
That a book defending #Christianity and the #Bible against #fundamentalists and #religious #nationalists could be relevant to #humanists might seem contradictory. However, the author’s approach—pairing #extremists’ stated beliefs with #Christ’s actual words—makes for informative and even entertaining reading.

I believe that Canada has had its version of Assisted Dying (Medical Assistance in Dying) since 2016.
As of today the UK now has it, unless the House of Lords can do anything to overturn it I guess (?).
We've had friends who would have welcomed this as the pain they experienced was too much for them, they just wanted to pop off.

Nigerian Humanist released
Humanist sentenced to 24 years for blasphemy is released
January 2025
We are delighted to report that Mubarak Bala has been released from prison in Nigeria having been sentenced to 24 years for the ‘crime’ of blasphemy. Two members of the Salisbury Amnesty group attended a demonstration outside the Nigerian Embassy in London organised by the Humanists.
Mubarak, President of the Nigerian Humanist Association, was arrested under Sharia law in Kano state for peacefully expressing humanist beliefs on Facebook. He was denied access to his legal team and his family and at times feared for his life.
Humanists International and Humanists UK campaigned for his release and meetings were held with Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office ministers, they staged a protest outside the Nigerian Embassy (pictured) and raised his case at the UN Human Rights Council. His case was raised on many occasions in parliament. The Nigerian Court of Appeal reduced his sentence to 5 years but the Humanists argued for his immediate and unconditional release. After four and a half years, he has now been released. He still fears for his life.
Twelve countries still have the death penalty for the so-called crime of blasphemy. Other countries will imprison such people. It encourages mobs to act violently against those who allegedly cause ‘religious offence’. The Humanists will continue to act for the repeal of all blasphemy laws.

I'm really pleased to get my advance copy of 'What I Believe' edited by Andrew Copson. Seeing my words amongst those of such great people is quite humbling. My part is on my thoughts about an open-source world and how it benefits mankind.

During the #Renaissance period most #humanists were Christians, so their concern was to "purify and renew #Christianity", not to do away with it. Their vision was to return ad fontes ("to the sources") to the simplicity of the Gospels and of the New Testament, bypassing the complexities of medieval Christian #theology.

As #Humanists, we believe #healthcare should be a human right, available to all regardless of citizenship, ability to pay, etc. and that this MUST include #mentalhealth care as a standard. Anyone should be able to walk into any clinic, say "I need help" and get that help, period. This is reflective of both #humanist values and Gene Roddenberry's vision of a better future. We know that the only way to get there is to "boldy go" together.

Now in its 12th edition, the Report serves as a vital tool for local and international #activists to lobby #governments for change, providing the evidence needed to make reliable and #authoritative claims. -

So yeah, I am INCREDIBLY excited about #AmericanHumanistAssociation's upcoming conference in #Denver (May 5-7). I'm really really hoping to attend in person, but there's also the possibility of attending online, COVID and cost depending.
"Crossroads & Collective Futures"
"AHA leaders, activists, and community members will convene and continue to build the future of humanism. Our conference will include opportunities to connect, learn, and plan."

Well it looks like it's becoming a reality. The #bird is dying - rapidly. It's a shame because I really loved interacting with my followers. There were a lot of like minded #atheists and #humanists.
Either way, I heard hastags are how you are found here so here are mine.

In every end, a beginning. What is possible, if #Twitter really disappears? We get to imagine the answer.
Calling all #fiction #writers, #humanists, #radicals, #fanfic creators, incorrigible #dreamers, #tech visionaries, #revolutionaries and #optimists:
Can we write a #utopian story together that begins like this?
Once upon a time, a rich man bought himself a fancy toy, and broke it.
