@bleepbloop My memories of first visiting and then living in Hulme as a student and ex-student also in the late 80s / early 90s are similar.

There were times when it was scary (I was mugged twice, not that I had any money to cough up, and there was at least one occasion someone tried to break into our flat) and probably loads of times when it was mundane, but of course it's the big events and the parties (indoor or outdoor) that stick in the memory. And nights at the PSV. So many nights at the PSV!

If you go through the area now it's completely unrecognisable, and almost certainly a much nicer place to live. But I do sometimes feel a wave of nostalgia for those old concrete deck access blocks.

I also found a very old picture I took from the walkway outside our flat.

Interestingly it makes only passing mention of how the PSV, which was renamed a few times, was formerly the Russel Club, the venue where the original Factory Records nights were held. Legend has it that when the Hacienda started getting really popular some of the original crowd moved on to the PSV because only locals would go there. By the mid 90s I was DJing there monthly at the Acid Rock techno night.

1991 #PSV club in #hulme #manchester I used to go to a night called Fun House which was absolute chaos. They would play this at the end of the night and everyone would be hugging and crying LOL. goodness me, 33 years ago. Hahaha.

I used to go #raving at the #PSV in #hulme #manchester in Summer 1991. What was amazing (apart from the music and the crowd) was that at the time it didn't occur to me that we were all about 20 or thereabouts. The whole event - the promotion, the DJs, the lights, the P.A. and the crew were no older than about 23 - and we were doing our own thing in our own way. There were no adults telling us what to do. Amazing times.

The Jeff Noon book Vurt was essentially born from Hulme which he renamed Bottletown. I was a middleclass white student in manchester 89-91 and Hulme was somewhere I would go to score sticky black. Thankfully I was never in a dangerous situation but at that time Hulme was lawless and sometimes frightening.
