The Forever Machine (aka They'd Rather be Right) by Mark Clifton and Frank Riley. This was the 1955 Hugo winner. It's widely believed to be the worst book to ever win a Hugo award so I don't have high hopes for it. But the good news is that I found a copy of the rare Galaxy Publishing edition with cool cover art by the famous Wally Wood
