Tras la elección del presidente #socialista #HugoChávez en 1998, #Venezuela se convirtió rápidamente en el aliado más cercano de #Cuba. Al inicio de su mandato, Chávez firmó junto a #FidelCastro el Convenio Integral de Cooperación Cuba-Venezuela, mediante el cual especialistas cubanos aportaron su experiencia en Venezuela en los ámbitos de la cultura, la educación, la #salud y otros.
Venezuela posee las mayores reservas de #petróleo del mundo, pero su sistema de salud siempre había enfrentado escasez de medicamentos y personal. Cuba envió miles de médicos y enfermeras a trabajar en Venezuela, donde se les pagaba muchas veces más que los exiguos salarios que ganaban en Cuba. A cambio, Venezuela enviaba petróleo a la isla.

Very early in his term, Chávez signed alongside #FidelCastro the Comprehensive Cooperation Agreement that saw Cuban specialists lend their expertise inside of Venezuela in the fields of culture, #education, health, and more. Venezuela has the largest oil reserves in the world, but its #healthcare system had always faced #medicine and staff shortages. Cuba sent thousands of doctors and nurses to work in Venezuela, where they were paid many times the tiny salaries they earned in Cuba. In exchange, Venezuela shipped #oil to Cuba.

Sept 27, 2025When Edith Perales was younger, he enlisted in the National Bolivarian Militia, a civilian force created by the late President #HugoChávez in 2009 to help defend Venezuela.
"We have to be a country capable of defending every last inch of our territory so no one comes to mess with us," Chávez said at the time.
Sixteen years on, Perales, who is now 68, is joining thousands of other militia members getting ready for a potential US attack.
The rag-tag force, mainly made up of senior citizens, has been called up following the deployment of US navy ships in the South Caribbean on what #US officials said were counter-narcotics operations.
