Starlink claims its first corporate victim. Satellite broadband provider HughesNet goes Chapter 11.

Hughesnet has lost over half of its subscriber base since Starlink first launched in the US as a beta in late 2020. In its Q2, it lost 59,000 subscriber to get to a total of 622,000 and they do not expect this trend to reverse.

Years ago, I worked for an organization with an office so remote that it relied on satellite-based internet service via #HughesNet .

At the time, I found that HughesNet injected trackers into the HTML of web pages loaded through it. The HughesNet people denied that their service did this, but the trackers were obviously theirs. (Also, I could demonstrate this by using ssh to access an off-site machine and use them to load pages without the trackers using curl .)

#StarLink wasn't yet available, so I switched the org to the only other option, #ViaSat , which also offered better value.

I learned that ViaSat apparently was first, then HughesNet apparently stole from them.

HughesNet seems pretty sleazy.

I'm not surprised to see #Starlink raising prices again. $120/mo for fixed service, $150/mo for mobile. The speeds keep on dropping and the reliability is starting to take a hit too. It's still better than #HughesNet almost all of the time, but space wireless is still wireless.

Good news is that #hughesnet hands out ipv6 addresses. The bad news is that it doesn’t work in a lot of cases… #ipv6
