@potterybyosa they look awesome - would love to try these in my veggie patch! Also wondering how well they would work in my #hugelkultur - I imagine the soil has to wrap around fully and touch the vessel for best osmosis effect. It could also help break down sticks/logs at the bottom quicker, releasing the nutrients a little faster; would love to try that out. #sustainability #gardening #TEK #TraditionalEcologicalKnowledge

Got a small amount of twigs, weeds and branches cluttering up the garden? Don't send them to the landfill, where diesel guzzling chippers grind them up. How to get rid of plant debris using only biological energy. Put twigs, weeds, kitchen scraps, even logs in the bottom of a large container (hopefully repurposed like this one) and put your planting soil on top. Then plant something. No gas or electric chippers or burning required. Besides the human effort of gathering and cutting up the pieces with a hand lopper, the microbes and worms do the work of turning the carbon into good soil.

#Hügelkultur (pronounced hoogleculture) is #German for #HillCulture . You grow crops on raised, earthen mound that consists of a foundation of logs/branches covered in layers of manure, compost & soil.

Our land sits in a "saddle" between two higher hills north and south, draining off to the Chesapeake Bay to our west and St. Lawrence Seaway to the east. That means we have quite a lot (increasing amounts) of water pooling and flowing across our property.
Rather than finding ways to divert that more quickly, as a #ClimateChangeMitigation and #biodiversity promoting strategy I'll be experimenting with turning some of those EAB killed ash trees into #hugelkultur beds.
