Just learned something from Paul Wheaton (Permaculture guy) that makes a lot sense about building #Hugelkultur beds. Don't put the wood in a trench, cut trenches on sides of wood & put soil from the trench on the pile. The trench becomes a walking path. And serves as a flood control mechanism 🥳 1/2

Unexpected morning with some helpers filling and planting this filing cabinet up outside the office. Lots of branches came down in a nearby carpark in recent storms so the bottom of this is filled with wood and leaves. We had some older planters here before and filled it with that soil and lots of bulbs and will add herbs soon. More dirt added on top of the smaller wood and washed in. The woven poly barrier cut and pulled up on the insides and leaves added around the edges to hold it up. Then dirt was put around the edges, more small sticks in the middle, and finally a layer of dirt on top of everything.

I sawed up some of the willow debris pile which was somewhat rotted in the bottom. The big pieces were shortened and dirt was added and washed in, then a layer of the small sticks added.

Preparing the first new raised bed. I dug out all the better soil and I might dig it down more so I can mix that light colored soil with the wood. I need to cut the willow wood up a little too so it fits tighter. Willow and poplar tree roots will still be a problem but I guess I can dig them out still if needed. I don't want to bury any poly barrier and it wouldn't really be hugelkultur if I did.

Also wondering how well they would work in my #hugelkultur - I imagine the soil has to wrap around fully and touch the vessel for best osmosis effect. It could also help break down sticks/logs at the bottom quicker, releasing the nutrients a little faster; would love to try that out. #sustainability #gardening #TEK #TraditionalEcologicalKnowledge
