🇨🇦 #hudsonsbaycompany
The proposed liquidation of many of the Hudson’s Bay Company’s (HBC) collections that together trace over three centuries of Indigenous and European interaction across this continent represents a profound threat to Canada’s collective memory and identity. An Ontario Superior Court judge ruled that the company could move forward with an auction of 4,400 items — including historic artifacts and artworks.

I was a courier in Toronto in 2000/ 2001. I'd deliver mail to HBC's corporate headquarters. They had the HBC charter in a display case in their lobby.
The display case was like a high-end jewelry case with interior lighting, while the rest of the lobby was a little dim. I would look at the charter in awe of its age and historical consequence.
I hope it is obtained by Canada and put in a museum.

@chris It’s a physical reminder of Canada’s corporate underpinnings and the genocidal takeover of the land via its iconic smallpox blankets. Good riddance.

From https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hudson's_Bay_Company :
It looks like the end of the #HudsonsBayCompany has been coming for a while:
"In 2006, Jerry Zucker, an American businessman, bought HBC for US$1.1 billion."
The real estate was apparently reorganized under its own holding company:
"It also owns or manages approximately 3.7 million square metres (40 million square feet) of gross leasable real estate through its HBC Properties and Investments business unit."
(Granted, that "or" seems to do some heavy lifting to obfuscate how much it actually "owns" vs. just "manages".)

Ship logs from 1740 to 1855. Notice the steady stream of ships in and out of that Artic. I suspect almost exclusively heading to Hudson's Bay as part of the #HudsonsBayCompany

The project, announced two years ago, will see the six-storey, 60,000-square-metre downtown building turned into an #Indigenous hub of housing, social services, government offices & cultural space.
#HudsonsBayCompany transferred the #historic building in 2022 to the Southern Chiefs’ Organization, which represents 34 #FirstNation groups in southern #Manitoba.

Discovered today that a x3 great grandfather from Orphir, Orkney worked for the #HudsonsBayCompany & bought a small farm in Orphir after his return. Checking #Sasine abridgements for something else when I found the one relating to him. Icing on the cake of a lovely 5 days in #Orkney #FamilyHistory #Scotland
