✧ Hualien earthquake ✧

The Hualien earthquake occurred on 3 April 2024. It was a Mw 7.4 earthquake in Hualien County, Taiwan. At least 19 people were killed and over 1,100 were injured. It was the strongest earthquake to strike Taiwan since the 1999 Jiji earthquake. This photograph shows the partially-collapsed Uranus Building.

• JTWC reports 1-min wind speed of 125kts/144mph/232kph with gusts up to 150kts/173mph/278kph.
• It will start to weaken as its circulation moves into #Taiwan, cutting off fresh supply of warm sea water.
• It will make landfall between #Yilan and #Hualien late this evening, and exit through #Taoyuan and #Hsinchu early Thu morning.
• Upon exit, it will gain new water supply from its southwest quadrant with no land barrier. The worst rainfall is yet to come.
