  1. I have code for 1 KiB PageGrain on MIPS qemu, which should enable a demonstration of handling a case very near VAX 512 B pages while seamlessly guaranteeing within-allocation-unit promotions to 4 KiB and 16 KiB for 64 KiB allocation units and also seamlessly handling superpage promotions to sizes that are power-of-four multiples of 64 KiB. I think there may have been some testing of a similar scenario using 256 KiB allocation units on LoongArch, but while it was verified that it didn't crash, not much was done to make sure that effective use was being made of sub- allocation unit -sized superpages esp. when there were multiple superpage sizes available between the minimum MMU mapping granularity and the kernel allocation unit.

Rolling pgcl forward to 7.0 and the intermediate pre-7.1 somehow resuscitated binutils issues with running LTP and DAMON on hppa and some others, but it got to having no LTP regressions vs. master on 16 arches. I still need to induce enough fragmentation within a qemu session to be able to observe non-negligible defragmentation costs that might be reduced.

  2. As a kid i dreamed of ALL THE tech and what could be. New stuff always excited me but these days it's just dire, the only thing in recent years that brought back some joy was #VR and #RISC_V but everything else coming out, I just wonder how big tech will use it to fuck us up even more...

And as kid I would have also never dreamed that things like a 21 years old #HPUX #Unix workstation would help me stay sane and fill me with true wonder instead.

  7. And here we go, a true #Unix machine with two #PARISC CPU's, OS is HP UX and one the last #RISC workstation #HP released, while switching to Intels ultimate lemon Itanium, should have stayed with their own silicon. This will be fun to figure out.

  8. Update! The HP9000/712‘s Power Supply Unit had an error in the IC STR80154A that is responsible for doubling 115V to 230V. It was latched up in doubling mode, causing a short circuit.

👀 Now the machine is in "Graphics Error" mode (flashing power LED). Screen says out of range (not sure if true or it just doesn't like 75Hz). Does anyone know in which actual situations the LED flashing happens and when not?

  18. Yesterday I got the AD385A 10 gigabit (10GBASE-SR4) NIC card in my HP Workstation C8000 working. The C8000 was HP's last Precision Architecture workstation, introduced in late 2003. Mine has two dual core 1 GHz PA8900 CPUs.
The AD385A has the short reach optical transceiver embedded, as it predates SFP+. My closest 10G switch port was copper, so rather than running fiber to the rack, I used a 10G media translator.

The Debian install I apparently did the last time on the #HP #Visualize B180L is broken (kernel panic at boot), guess I now have one more thing to do this winter :shibasmug:
