Is there a version of the @popularposts or @hypebot type accounts that avoid horrifying news? I come to #mastodon to learn about the dumb nerdy shit you are all up to I can get my doom and misery elsewhere. Am I better off setting up blocks for keywords?

Follow #tags
Maybe follow close friends and family, maybe don't and subscribe to their RSS feed instead.
Never follow strangers, subscribe to their RSS feed.
Don't pose. Don't pretend. Never argue. Never defend yourself. Don't take offence. Don't preach, teach, best by the example you set.
Do interesting things offline and share them with your online friends and family.
Maybe try to make new friends
Be open to have a conversation when a stranger says "Hi, I like what you do" -

For those figuring this place out:
Liking a post let's the post author know that it prompted a reaction from you. It made you think. Made you smile. Made you roll on the floor laughing. Made you cry. Gave you hope. Made your day better in some way. Prompted you to imagine a different way of being. Anything, really.
Like posts all the time.Boost a post to put it in the timeline of the folks who follow you, even though they may not follow the post author. This helps people find more content and gives the post author a wider audience. Boost often.

My process for Boosting and Starring toots on Mastodon
When I scan the feed and come across items of interest I process them using the following criterion:
BOOST: If I want to share the item for others to see or believe is important to engage, I boost the toot.
STAR: If I want to show the tooter my appreciation for a toot but don’t need to share it, I star the toot.
I only BOOST and STAR extremely rarely. When it’s done to me it gums up my notifications. #mastodon #howToMastodon

When someone boosts an interesting post, I want to be able to thank them. I can easily interact with the boosted post, but I can't favorite the boosting action itself. I could send the person who boosted a direct message but I worry it would be out of context. How do you let people know that you appreciate their boosts?
When I boost it feels like it is going into a void. It would be nice to know if my boosting was helpful.

Well, Mastodon however you want.
But here is an option;Found an account who posts good stuff. But too too much of it?
Or good stuff mixed with hmmmm-rather-not stuff?You could make a List for that account's Posts.
And in the options switch off seeing those posts in your Timeline.
Then you can skim through the List output and get enough. Or focus on just the good stuff.Approach works too for those high value accounts that you don't want to miss a single post from.

Mastodonning My Way Report
Things are going well.
I am getting a sufficient stream in my Timeline of mainly high interest posts.
I use the web browser interface.
And have turned off "See boosts"
When I need more places and faces I just go to my Instance's or the Project's Timeline and watch the photons whirl by.
When I touch "See new posts" after 40 minutes learning about #Torcs, their re-use and re-cycling, I have at most a few new posts to look at.
Much better.

I‘m following a number of hashtags and was forever wondering how to do that somewhat more efficiently as there are some that combine well, like linguistics and languages.
Ideally it should be possible to create a list based on hashtags but so far I couldn’t find a way to do that, neither in the web interface nor various apps.
Today I realised that the IceCubes app has a hashtag grouping feature and it allows me to see a feed just for a selection of hashtags - and I don’t even need to follow those from my profile (meaning I can keep my main feed clutter free).

And a complete aside from that, does anyone know how to follow someone when clicking onto their post (Merry's in this case) leads to a page on a different server that asks me to log in or make an account? I am under-self-informed about how Mastodon works (I just fled Twitter in disgust last fall) and I don't understand why navigating between instances is sometimes difficult, esp trying to follow.) #Howtomastodon

In order of priority
1) move to a (smaller) instance that
houses people with similar interests.
2) Be social. Favorite toots that you like, comment, boost.
3) Use hashtags. Search for them and use them in your post.
4) Use mastodon groups. Look at some of my toots for example groups.
5) Maybe Mastodon is not for you and you want to try a different kind of algorithm free, ad-free environment like Vero True Social. -

My instutition is willing to join Mastodon soon. Sometimes I feel that I'm not posting enough, and boosting too much. Then I remember that one of the best ways to do it is to find an interesting post (perhaps something that someone else has boosted), click on it to get the thread history, and find something reply to in it.

I've had about 4 or 5 notifications of the same account following me across the last few days.
Is this an issue on my end? Or is it more likely that this account is repeatedly following then unfollowing then following again?

The choice of your “home instance” does matter. While you can “chose ANY server” to start with #Mastodon and enter the #fediverse some care & diligence during a #migration is advised...

Mastodon is no harder than Twitter was when it was also new to us. If any of your friends feel stuck in Twitter, remind them they can have a Mastodon account too, and soon they will just prefer Mastodon. I have no doubt.

1. How do you add #hashtags to your bio? When I try to add then they don’t seem to be hyperlinks. What am I missing?

Is there a way to *bulk* schedule Toots rather than hand-edit them one by one?
I've found the tool at https://www.scheduler.mastodon.tools/
But I'm wondering if anyone has developed a way to upload a CSV to a similar tool and schedule a mess of Toots.
For anyone thinking of running a large storytelling or history account (to name a few) it would be a boon to be able to write your story, then do a large dump versus feeding the beast with a spoon.
