The minimum wage goes up here in the UK (called National Living Wage) but for many most of it will be clawed back by the DWP (or local council if you still claim Housing Benefit and don't get the UC or IS etc). Something that is never mentioned in discussions about whether people on low incomes are better off.

Let me talk about a paper that was just accepted in the Journal of the European Economics Association.

This paper studies the cuts to #HousingBenefit, specifically, the cut to #LocalHousingAllowance.

In that paper we show that the cut drastically increased #evictions, it ripped communities apart, and came at a huge cost to councils.

We estimate that for every GBP 1 pound the central govt saved in #HousingBenefit, council #homelessness #prevention increased easily by 53 pence.

I’m interested in following other people who are on #benefits #ESA #housingbenefit - as well as other people who grew up in council / housing association accommodation. Big up the #underclass
