  1. Mistodon: this #ASCIIart interpretation of the cover art to #MarkZDanielewski's 2000 novel #HouseOfLeaves was drawn by Moth. This piece was included in last month's new books-themed MIST0426 artpack collection.

  2. Krakauer is very much a Navidson figure, an adventure journalist, his wife isn't happy about his dangerous treks though she's come to uneasily accept that this is who he is, and he's journeying though a liminal environment towards impending doom.

  3. I'm reading a ratty paperback copy of Into Thin Air (with a mysterious fake Jon Krakauer autograph) about a journalist (Krakauer) on a Mt Everett climb that ends in tragedy, and its feeling like a prequel to House of Leaves.

Wouldn't be surprised if Danielewski read this.

  4. We have another quick break in our scheduled programming today, back to the pixelated horrors of hell's invasion. This time, though, we're not at some Hi-Tech moon base or the rust-n-blood landscapes of Hell. No, today we're taking a look at MyHouse.wad

That's right, this totally normal tour through someone's home took the retro gaming scene by storm a few years back, and was such a treat to explore through! Everything from the engine trickery, to the soundtrack, to the custom enemies, all employed to such finesse that the end result was so polished and well thought out that even with years of experience playing this game and knowing the mapping tricks, I still got caught off guard with portions of this playthrough.

No joke, I still to this day find myself thinking back on this map fondly, wishing I could forget I had played it so that I could experience it fresh for the first time again. If you haven't heard of this map and are interested in a boomer shooter adaptation of #HouseOfLeaves you should go play this map, then come back and enjoy the VOD.

  6. I'm writing a parody sequel to House of Leaves about being trapped in an endless IKEA.

I'm calling it Couch of Twigs.

  7. Commonalities between Neverending Story and House of Leaves:

    - Multiple layers of reality
    - Center around books with mysterious origins received from an old man
    - Reading the book changes whoever reads it
    - A boy protagonist abandoned by his mother
    - The Nothing, a void personified by a stalking monster, representing a flaw of the mind
    - Deal with trauma via an impossible world
    - The impossible world changes based on the mentality of the protagonist
    - Subtle fourth wall breaks
    - Soundtracks

  8. Navidson: Why won't you publish my documentary??

Film Producer: Well, first there's the pacing issue.

Navidson: YES!!! That's what I've been trying to explain! The house measures a half pace bigger on the inside!!

  9. Ohhhhhhh. Sagan Hawkes just dropped a three and a half mile essay about The House Of Leaves..........

(If you haven't read the book, go do that first, and since he's gonna tie this in with MyHouse.wad, then play that or watch a playthrough, and only then watch the essay.)

(Seriously. House of Leaves is not a read so much as an experience. It's the book I feel the most about every time I'm reminded it exists.)

  10. I'm reading House Of Leaves for a second time and I think I might go to the library tomorrow to read. Because there's only two ways to read this book:

Like the editor, in a library, studiously
Like Zampanò, shutters closed, in the near dark, and a little bit of paranoia

(You could also read it like Johnny, but that's the same as Zampanò but horny.)

  11. "There are several more shots. Trees in winter. Blood on the kitchen floor. One shot of a child (Daisy) crying. Then back to Navidson: "Nothing but this tape which I've seen enough times, its more like a memory than anything else. And I still don't know: was he right or just out of his mind?" Followed by three more shots. Dark hallways. Windowless rooms. Stairs."

    — Mark Z. Danielewski: House of Leaves, pp. 5-5

These various images stuck with me.

  12. "Whoever finds and publishes this work shall be entitled to all proceeds. I ask only that my name take its rightful place. Perhaps you will even prosper. If, however, you discover that readers are less than sympathetic and choose to dismiss this enterprise out of hand, then may I suggest you drink plenty of wine and dance in the sheets of your wedding night, for whether you know it or not, now you truly are prosperous. They say truth stands the test of time. I can think of no greater comfort han knowing this document failed such a test."

  13. "I'd been in the throes of looking for an apartment after a little difficulty with a landlord who woke up one morning convinced he was Charles de Gaulle. I was so stunned by this announcement that before I could think twice I'd already told him how in my humble estimation he did not at all resemble an airport though the thought of a 757 landing on him was not at all disagreeable. I was promptly evicted. I could have put up a fight but the place was a nuthouse anyway and I was glad to leave. As it turned out Chuckie de Gaulle burnt the place to the ground a week later. Told the police a 757 had crashed into it."

  14. I did a little #Poe karaoke cover dealy, and like any good fan of #HouseOfLeaves, I added my own verse at the end like a note in a margin.

  15. Rosie O'Donnell, however, offered a different perspective when she wryly remarked on Entertainment Tonight: "The fact that Holloway waited that long to use a compass only goes to show how men–even explorers–still refuse to ask for directions."

  16. When I looked at the #HouseOfLeaves hashtag someone linked to a video about “myhouse.wad”, a YouTube play through of a mysterious doom map.

I sent it to my friend who gave me the book, but didn’t watch it then.

I didn’t realize it was a movie length masterpiece. Seriously, this thing took a long time to make.

It reminds me of an actual terrifying experience I had playing a doom mod back in the day.

  21. I have started reading #HouseOfLeaves . And by reading, I mean leaving it in the bathroom and reading a random section while I’m in there. Sequentially I’ve read about 4 pages of introduction.

For example, I noticed in the index there was a single page reference for Eagle. So I read from the page before that to the page after it. The first two pages were all lies.

If they are going to be an unreliable narrator I am going to be an unreliable reader.

I am also writing notes inside.

  26. so i recently had this horrible problem with the backup software i'm using where it would find a seemingly unlimited quantity of files in my downloads folder - the number would just keep going up the longer it looked, and after some hours it reported to have uploaded 5,165,681 files (or 30,549.48 GB) from my 500GB SSD, with 306,750,319 files (38,332.45 GB) left to go, all the while it filled that drive with its own database. I assumed this to be a bug in the software, because the alternative, being that I had somehow downloaded the Navidson house, seemed implausible.

Until, after significant debugging efforts, I found a folder in my downloads helpfully titled "uhh" that appeared to contain... itself. Attempting to delete it caused Windows Explorer to try to recycle over 30,000 files and then crash. It also had some other weird, kind of broken folders within it, with names that imply some sort of puzzle. And then I remembered watching some youtube video, years ago, talking about this Windows bug or something you could exploit with the command prompt to make infinitely nested folders and extremely hidden files. I fear that I did this on purpose. WinDirStat is somehow able to show me that beyond the infinite nested folder loop, if I was able to get to the bottom of the well and open what I guess is the ωth folder, there is in fact a file called "here.txt". I now have two goals: delete the folder, but get the text file out of it first.

Unfortunately I am utterly hopeless to find the original youtube video, but after much googling of similar issues, I have the puzzle solution: prefixing a full file path with \\?\ or \\.\ in cmd allows you to work with illegal pathnames. A file or folder with a name ending in a space causes all sorts of weird problems, and naming a folder ... creates the infinite loop I was seeing. I finally deleted the labryinth and got here.txt out of it; the contents of the file are as follows:

    There's nothing here.

    No secrets.

    No mystery.

    Just this text file.

Go look somewhere else. You'll just be wasting time here!

Oh well. Did you at least have fun on the journey? It's a lot harder on windows computers, I'll say!

Fuck you, past me. That took me a day.

(I guess in hindsight it was kinda fun though...)

  27. I tend to read ebooks these days but today I bought a real book: House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski. It’s been recommended to me a lot recently. I’ll be interested to find out whether the weird formatting and somewhat experimental nature is a gimmick or actually adds to the story.

  28. 1. #House of Leaves to książka Marka Z. Danielewskiego z roku 2000.

    7. Czytanie powieści przyszło mi bardzo naturalnie, ponieważ skakanie pomiędzy różnymi odniesieniami jest umiejętnością, którą posiada każdy internauta skaczący np. po Wikipedii. Nie od razu to pojąłem.

    8. Gdybym miał wskazać jakkolwiek podobną książkę, to byłaby to „Gra w klasy” Julia Cortazara.

    9. Obok książki powstał album „Haunted” Poe (czyli Anne Decantur... Danielewski). Rodzeństwo inspirowało się nawzajem podczas tworzenia jednego i drugiego.

    10. Ponad 700-stronnicową powieść pochłonąłem w bardzo szybkim dla siebie tempie i jestem zachwycony i mogę jedynie polecić.

  29. I'M SO EXCITED RIGHT NOW!!! I just finished reading #ThePrioryOfTheOrangeTree by #SamanthaShannon a few minutes ago (took me 6 months, but I loved it!) and now I'm about to start a book my husband gave me for Christmas last year: #HouseOfLeaves by #MarkZDanielewski . I've been dying to read it, but I know it'll take me a while so I wanted to make sure I finished Priory first.
