This is an older picture of a couple #ToynbeeTiles that used to be on Broad Street in #Philadephia, but they were lost when it was repaved a few few weeks ago. Damn shame but that’s how it goes.

Another #ToynbeeTile from #HouseOfHades 2024 collection, this one located right here in Philadelphia. It’s shaping up to be a great season - I’ve got a bunch more reports and found my first tile of the season and they look great! 2023 was a little flat imo, but 2024 is strong.
This tile was sent in from a correspondent in #Detroit. She says that this #HouseOfHades #ToynbeeTile is located at an intersection where a pedestrian was struck and killed by a vehicle earlier this year. A rare trip into #Philly yesterday, and I was thrilled to spot two new #HouseOfHades #ToynbeeTiles right near City Hall. These symbols or messages embedded in asphalt streets fascinate me as an art form.

The holidays have me thinking about what I’m thankful for, and one of the top items has to be the people that I’ve met while studying the #ToynbeeTiles , one of whom sent in this classic from #Baltimore.

Now doing #HouseOfHell (#HouseOfHades in the US, as "Hades" is obviously not as bad as "Hell"). Like the previous one, it is an extended version of a previously published mini adventure. I have very fond memories of this one on the grounds of being set in our real world and moving away from cliché fantasy tropes.
Found this tile near South Station in #Boston purely by chance after our flight was cancelled and we had to run to catch a train instead (at least we were able to work something out to get home). Anyway…it’s the only tile I know of in Boston, but I’m not sure if that’s because I don’t have enough eyes in Boston or there just really aren’t any others up there.

It’s a lot larger than a tile or similar design I’ve seen, but it’s position doesn’t really lend itself to “foot for reference” photos I like. There are also some other goodies nearby for ambitious tile watchers.
This monochrome #ToynbeeTile installation lives in lower #manhattan. It’s one of the most interesting ones I’ve come across since it involves a two-way communication medium instead of the normal exhortations to make and glue tiles, which are one-way obv. Some fellow enthusiasts pointed out to me that W.E. (Western Electric) Fortresses are a model of pay phone, but what does he use them for?? I’ve never heard of House of Hades calling anyone

Now that we’ve covered the basics of #toynbeetiles I’ll introduced a more advanced feature: the dial. A dial is really just a circular feature with one or more notches cut into it. In the picture below, there are three dials: red with a yellow notch, blue with a red notch, and yellow with a white (?) notch.

An extra large abstract house of hades #toynbeetile on the streets of #manhattan #nyc. This is among the largest ones I’ve ever seen, and it is certainly the most colorful. I think these abstract ones may have started as ways to dispose of scraps from the more literal tiles, but then became their own genre of mosaic. This is also one of the earliest totally abstract mosaics, and you can see components from other tiles in it.
