Silver‑Crowned Sparrow
Male house sparrows (Passer domesticus) always make me think of little knights — wearing a silver helmet on their heads and a black gorget on their chest. They’re Old-World sparrows, and in North America some people still refer to them as English sparrows.

The humble house sparrow is still one of my favourite birds. This family either moved in recently, or they didn't like the food I put up all winter, because it would sit there until it got moldy. Now I have to refill the feeders every day (There's also jackdaws raiding them, lol)

It’s early morning, and I’m typing in the dark so I don’t wake my wife. I’ve got SiriusXM running on my phone, feeding the news straight into my hearing aids. I kind of enjoy listening to Joe in the Morning while I drink my joe.
I’ve noticed how hotel technology has changed over the decades. I remember when checking in meant filling out a little questionnaire, knowing your license plate number, and being handed an actual metal key. Checking out meant going to the front desk to settle up before you left. Then hotels started slipping the invoice under the door at dawn and charging the card you checked in with. Eventually the metal keys gave way to keycards, and now even those are shifting from the old slide‑in slots to the tap‑to‑unlock style.
The hotel we’re in now still has the old‑fashioned slide‑in keycard reader. Maybe the tap locks won’t completely take over—kind of like how Betamax lost the war. Time will tell.
What really surprised me at check‑in was having to sign an actual piece of paper that included the make and model of my car. I haven’t had to do that in at least a decade, and I’ve stayed at this hotel before. When I asked about it, they said it was in case something happened with the car—like if I left the lights on. It also doubled as a sort of affidavit acknowledging that the rooms are non‑smoking.

It went quite slow at first, but the last few days the #birds ate half of the food 😱.
It's #nice 🥰. So many little birds in the backyard. Mainly #housesparrows and #greattits (we're talking birds people...). They especially like being on the inside, where they can quickly hide in the tree. The house sparrows are very careful, not letting themselves be photographed easily. But the great tits are a bit more daring.

There was a very handsome pair of house sparrows on top of the empty feeder when I stepped outside to change it for cleaning earlier. The smile it put on my face is still persistently returning. :-)

Sparrow in the City
I don’t have to go all the way to Savannah, Georgia to find house sparrows (Passer domesticus); there are dozens around my home. But Savannah happens to be where I took this picture of a little female. The image came out crisp, and the rusted metal post she’s perched on gives the whole scene a striking contrast that really makes her pop. This was along the river walk, where someone had tossed a handful of corn kernels into a landscaped island tucked between the walkways.
