  1. Just walked past a recently mown lawn, and there's a smell of fresh cut grass, and it's filling up my senses
And the sun is shining down on the blossoms in the avenue.

  3. 🎧 Mood.

Remembering a cold, gray afternoon with Gary, a lovely man and dear friend from Cork. Christmas Eve day 1988, at his apartment in DC.

Hothouse Flowers played while we sipped Jameson on the couch and chatted about nothing important, catching up. Gary was red-cheeked and glowing in Christmas sweater and forest green velvet corduroys, the most handsome I'd ever seen him, I thought.

He got up to pour us another, and called out from the kitchen how the whiskey would be flowing at his Mum's house about now. Back on the couch, he teared up, describing the scene he knew was unfolding. All his brothers and their families, the one Nan, the food, and opening presents after. Christmas Eve in Ireland.

We were quiet for a while. I stared at the small tree on a table in front of the window and fought tears myself. What home?

Finally, Gary stood up, and in the cheeriest voice he could muster, asked if I was ready to go.

The cab rang up. We chatted in the elevator about who might be out for Tea Dance, and got in the cab bound for TRACKS, to see and be seen. ❤️
