I'm now ~35h in the early access of #Subnautica2. At this point I finished the available content once and naturally started to fool around. What do you mean I can't control my sub like one of my space pew pew fighters? Make me! And yes there is a deeper sense in this - this is me learning to control the sub with my X52 Pro #HOTAS - that is my story and I'm sticking to it 😛

Finally have a working soldering iron again, added the brass inserts to frame so I could screw in the plate that holds the thunky switches and door bell button

Okay, the Thrustmaster Warthog HOTAS Throttle doesn't seem to work like I want with my combination of Mech Game and Linux...
...but it *does* make a stupidly expensive busybox, so really, why am I returning it? I could click these switches all day!

Der erste Erfolg im Urlaub ist geglückt. 😀👍

Looks like #ProjectWingman has a broken
Input.iniparser resulting in my #HOTAS mappings to be gone on restart. The problem is that some special characters, like a comma, break the INI format used by their controls implementation[/Script/Engine.InputSettings].Have an example what the game writes to
AppData/Local/ProjectWingman/Saved/Config/WindowsNoEditor/Input.ini
AxisMappings=(AxisName="Pitch Axis",Scale=-1.000000,Key=Joystick_ThrustMaster,IncF-16FlightControlSystem_2_Axis1)The name for the key is something homebrew the game produces based on the controller type (Joystick_ or Gamepad_) and the HID device descriptor name. This example mapped fine ingame but breaks on reload of the game resulting in only
ThrustMasterfor each mapped control – and that joystick can not be found, of course.The “fix” is to manually edit the file and add quotation marks for the key:
AxisMappings=(AxisName="Pitch Axis",Scale=-1.000000,Key="Joystick_ThrustMaster,IncF-16FlightControlSystem_2_Axis1")Now the game finds the proper joystick and all controls are mapped to something like
ThrustMaster,IncF-16FlightControlSystem_2_Axis1again, as expected.Needless to say that the file should probably be write protected after that – or at least saved again under a different name, because any change to the controls will overwrite this fix again. This problem does probably also happen with other special characters, like the © sign that some vendors are known to use.

Mission 01: Black Flag – Trying Project Wingman with my ViperPit
This is Project Wingman mission 01 Black Flag played on a Linux PC with Proton Experimental, OpenTrack with the Neuralnet Tracker plugin and my DIY HOTAS / rudder system based on Arduino Pro Micros replacing the original electronics in my Thrustmaster FLCS/Cougar gear:
Pick your poison: https://makertube.net/w/8MyoVSzDfwMuQR6bCqtbie / https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dq0sihlgW_Y
I got Project Wingman on a sale months ago and I finally gave it a try. As an Ace Combat player I felt right at home. My initial experiment was with the XR glasses and woah that feels good in 3D and all but today I remembered that old Plasma TV in the basement. Got it second hand a year ago for dead cheap. Today I brought it upstairs to try it with the ViperPit and now I’m not sure what’s more awesome.
Well, that is if I feel like burning ~470W on top for that thing but hey this is for very specific gaming sessions only anyway 🤷
Guess I’ll spend more time in the ViperPit again 😀

I may or may not be really interested in playing nuclear option and kinda board of struggling with a keyboard in flightsims. What are good budget HOTASes keep in mind the following
1. I live in India so a smaller brands might not be sold here
2. This is my first HOTAS. perfect is the enemy of good enough here.
Thank you for any suggestions :3

after roughly 5000 flight hours, both distant worlds and 24 other expeditions, defending sol from the thargoids, colonizing colonia, 3 times circling the galaxy on its outer rim and numerous visits to beagle point ... my trusty hotas just went belly-up. goodbye my friend ... hello new rig which will be delivered on thursday™. #elite #elitedangerous #distantworlds3 #hotas

Would you say a lot of space games in VR resort to HOTAS or gamepads instead of the VR controllers? And is that fine? Would love suggestions from players and other gamedevs!

So, tracked down the issue with Microsoft Flight Simulator (MSFS) 2024. The default permissions for the HOTAS `/dev/hidraw` devices is too restrictive. This is why neither MSFS 2024 or Elite: Dangerous saw the devices. I added new entries into the `udev` rules to relax the permissions and both games immediately saw the HOTAS.
```
KERNEL=="hidraw*", ATTRS{idVendor}=="231d", ATTRS{idProduct}=="0126", MODE="0666"
KERNEL=="hidraw*", ATTRS{idVendor}=="231d", ATTRS{idProduct}=="012d", MODE="0666"
```Now I get the honor of mapping controls to all sorts of control surfaces.

Today I took apart my Thrustmaster T16000M HOTAS, both the stick and the throttle. Nasty jumpy drift on both stick yaw and throttle analog stick. Fixed with some alcohol cleaning.
Thank goodness Thrustmaster designed these in a way that you can disassemble them to atoms and put it all back together without breaking anything but your warranty terms. So many people have said that these last for maybe 50 hours, but I'm well over 200 hours in already.

Ace Combat 7 with FULL SBS on PC? And head tracking? Hell yes :D
So bear with me if I mix something up, this is all news to me and I’m still flabbergasted. I got myself some XR glasses mostly for watching movies and perhaps some gaming on the Steam Deck a while ago.
Now I learned about “SBS” (Side-By-Side) mode like ~3 days ago, that the glasses support. I tried this with the game Elite Dangerous first, since this has an SBS mode built in too, and was mind blown. My current favourite time stink is Ace Combat though so I started digging.
Turns out there is this Reshade tool that would forcefully enable such a mode for basically any game with the right shader. Several exist but the first I found, “SuperDepth3D.fx”, seems to do the trick. Enabling it split the 1920×1024 in half with two slightly different view ports, one for each eye. There are many options to fine tune this and I’m still fiddling with this to find the perfect settings but results look great already.
My glasses do Full SBS though and have a resolution of 3840×1024. I read somewhere that wide-screen is possible with more DLL shenanigans with Ace Combat 7 too but I run the game on a Linux PC anyway, where we utilise a tool named “gamescope”. This allows basically to configure a virtual display for each game and override the game resolution in various ways. It also has a stretch option, which is exactly what I needed to get the “compressed” SBS view from 1920 to 3840, where the aspect ratio would fit again. BTW: This also has FSR built in so any upscaling looks good enough too. I’m not entirely sure but I think there’s a similar tool on Windows called “Virtual Deskop”?
Anyway, I already managed to get my head tracker working by mapping the output to a virtual gamepad on the look-around axes before. I also found a mod that enables a wider FOV. Imagine my stupid grinning when everything fell into place: Full SBS with head tracking, a more sane FOV and yes, I jumped all the hoops to get my HOTAS and rudder pedal of my old ViperPit working (which is a different story because my devices are so old that I had to upgrade em to USB before, which involved some Arduinos, programming and soldering). I guess that makes me a member of multiple niches at once 🤓
And since I’m aware that nobody can “see” what I’m talking about, without having XR glasses or a VR headset (or a DIY VR Box for smart phones) on their own, have also an Anaglyph 3D render. This requires just some old school two coloured (red and cyan) glasses often made of paper, that many people still have around somewhere, to get an idea.
The colour of the sky? It’s perfect. A deep dark blue.

IDK?

Got some help carrying the #ViperPit from the basement into my man cave today and since I got the peripherals operational again already, and got Ace Combat 7 on a sale, which seemed to be a good fit, I decided to play that first:
https://makertube.net/w/wiKFYNPaKhhCmrrz3aGLYb / https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HEPK0lHX_3sLittle did I know what a pain in the neck it would be to get this running. No, Linux wasn’t the problem. That was just Press Play, as usual.
There is however no settings menu for #HOTAS joysticks so any mapping has to be done by manually editing the `Input.ini` of the game in an text editor, which is a guessing game. Head tracking is also a no go. I pulled the old trick to map the head tracker to a virtual XBOX controller but the game comes with an annoying deadzone where the camera snaps to the center.
Ah well, got it all working okay-ish in the end and enjoyed some pew pew in the skies. There seem to be plenty of #Macross mods too so trying that will be next 🤘

`@ozoned` interviewed me on my home cockpit on a live stream via his #Owncast instance at https://stream.ozoned.net/. This is a more condensed version of the stream that is still just 1h shy. We’re going over almost every feature of my Primary Buffer Panel and I explain how everything works. I also decided to add various photos, slideshows or video snippets during the talk only sections so things don’t get too boring. Sometimes that even complements the talks 😄
Ever wondered how to start your own DIY #homeCockpit / #SimPit on? It’s easy. Just watch this stream 🤓

I just wanted to share how bizarre a product my #Winwing 16EX (ViperAce) joystick is.
In order for the integrated vibration motor to function, you’re required to purchase an additional plastic module that fastens to the top left of the stick. It features a 5-way HAT and a 2-axis stick with push.
The module itself contains no vibration motor. Just the chip that controls the motor inside the stick. My guess is that they couldn’t fit the chip inside the stick itself. It’s a ridiculous design.
On the other hand, they’re using a cheap switch to give the trigger a “click”. Brilliant honestly.
With the module attached the vibration from within the stick itself will only work when the Winwing SimAppPro software is running in the background, which includes the default (and customizable) vibration settings for aircraft of various flight sims like #DCSWorld, #BMS, and #MSFS.
The vibration isn’t force feedback but it does vary in how it vibrates with different aircraft in a way that’s pleasant and intuitive to the touch. This goes for all their products featuring vibration motors.
Pulling high AoA in a Mirage F1? It’ll vibrate aggressively.
Launching a Sparrow in an F/A-18C? It’ll give a short gentle vibration as the missile comes off the rail.
Vortex Ring State setting in while hovering your Mi-24? It’ll start buffeting against your hand with increasing intensity.
If you don’t care about vibration and don’t want SimAppPro running in the background, then don’t bother with the additional “shaker” module. It doesn’t “add” a whole lot.
Despite the stupid design, it’s a great product. I’ve had no issues over the past few months of use.
-
Well, this is it. I’ve achieved greatness and far exceeded my own expectations.

Chilling. Being a cat. Living his best life as I fly.

I'm back on my #arduino #HOTAS bullshit. My new project will include two Arduinos connected with i2c.
Mega will gather tens of digital button inputs and handle all the interference from terrible soldiering and weird connections.
Leonardo will handle a few analog inputs, get all the delicious button data from Mega and emulate the joystick

Part of me feels like “Did I go too far with this?”
These are so much fun to fiddle around with. They’re just a pair of stim toys.

So,
yesterday was my first #X4 Session. I lied. It was like the 4th or so. 1st session was to install base game, expansions and patches in #linux. The following sessions were to configure my #hotas with tons of mappings.
Yesterday. I flew around a bit (while constantly changing the bindings) but it was fun.
But I need #money MONEY!!
