  1. The Human-Environment Connection & Interaction Atlas (HECIA) feels like a #Worldbuilding project gone a bit too far, but is actually a real-world design tool to help preserve residents’ mental health in hostile environments.

  3. The UK Home Office is automating the hostile environment.

    A legal opinion for ORG shows that the use of AI in asylum decision-making is likely to be unlawful.

  5. Home Office - Hostile Environment Policy

    The UK Home Office hostile environment policy is a set of administrative and legislative measures designed to make staying in the United Kingdom as difficult as possible for people without leave to remain, in the hope that they may "voluntarily leave".

    The Home Office policy was first announced in 2012 under the Conservative–Liberal Democrat coalition. The policy was widely seen as being part of a strategy of reducing UK immigration figures to the levels promised in the 2010 Conservative Party Election Manifesto.

    The policy led to issues with the Windrush generation and other Commonwealth citizens not being able to prove their right to remain in the UK. The resulting Windrush scandal led to the resignation of Amber Rudd as Home Secretary, on 29 April 2018, and the appointment of Sajid Javid as her successor.

  6. For a year, we've asked the UK Home Office to allow migrants to use a physicaI ID to prove their right to be in the UK.

    This latest eVisa fiasco shows why this is urgently needed.

  7. The UK eVisa scheme gets even worse.

    Migrants have been made to get an eVisa and then get told it's not accepted as valid ID or proof of immigration status!

    This hostile scheme is pushing people into uncertainty and risks creating another Windrush scandal.

  8. The Digital Hostile Environment is expanding 🚨

    The UK Border Security, Asylum and Immigration Bill gives broad powers to impose conditions on a person with lawful leave in the UK, including electronic monitoring and any other conditions the Home Secretary sees fit.

    We demand #DigitalSanctuary for all migrants!

  9. ORG published our 'e-Visas: Hostile and Broken' report about the UK Home Office's flawed e-Visa scheme.

    We warned that an online-only proof of status could create a digital Windrush scandal, leading to the scheme's roll-out being delayed.

    We hope this will be an opportunity to bring in changes that will ensure people can prove their immigration status in any circumstance.

  10. Heh, latest in the UK #eVisa situation - they're basically telling people to get a share-code from the eVisa system when entering the UK "just in case". So there's now a new generic "prove my immigration status" share-code option.

    The checker gets to select one of these reasons they're checking a share-code:

    * a driving licence
    * a student loan
    * education or training
    * a global or european health insurance card
    * personal finance (including bank and building society accounts, loans, credit cards and mortgages)
    * homelessness assistance or council housing
    * another reason

    I don't know if all these things needed immigration status checks before, I didn't have to do anything to prove immigration status for any of my last few bank accounts or driving licence renewal, and Kat didn't need to for her learner permit.

    So I assume the #HostileEnvironment is being expanded.

    Also, homeless people who cannot prove their right to be in the UK won't be able to get "assistance"?

  11. @TimWardCam what often happens is they have the baby in the UK, then due to #HostileEnvironment and #racism (particularly in #school environments) then subsequently return with their partner and child to their home country (or at least move out of #EastAnglia ) - so the whole region loses out on the benefit of having the child (who will eventually grow into a teenager and young adult). I've noticed village stores increasingly staffed by older folk due to lack of young people in some areas..

  12. CW: UK Politics

    If Yvette Cooper is so upset about "illegal workers", I have a suggestion for her.

    How about making it legal to work?

    Seems like that would be a lot cheaper, and then the workers could pay tax as well. Win win.

    But maybe that wouldn't meet her number one priority of showing the Daily Mail that Labour hates foreigners just as much as they do?
