  1. Took me years to figure out these spore producing Horsetail stems in early spring. Maybe 6 inches tall. They'll soon die off and be replaced with the green little christmas tree form from underground rhizomes.

  2. 🧵 2/3

I learned from this page that in Japan horsetail symbolizes spring, which might be relevant to the song.

Through my, ahem, "research" - 10 minutes on the internet - I have also learned that horsetail is toxic to horses and, having been introduced to New Zealand in the 1920s, is now regarded there as an invasive species.

That's enough useless information; let's get back to Nishina in the third and final post on this thread...

  3. Things found on the way to something else. quiltr.com/?p=24404 Here is the Wudang horsetail whisk form: • Turn around the body • Yellow dragon covers its head … #chinesedrama #dothework #horsetail #poetry #process #rummaging #wudang

  4. Search engines and my books are failing me today. I’m trying to find out how horsetail is used to stop external bleeding. I know it can be used as a poultice, but I’m not sure how that’s made. At what point in the growing season can it be used this way? Is it ground up by itself, or is water added? In a pinch, can it be chewed up and then put on a wound? #Herbalism #Horsetail #poultice #medicine

  5. The prompt this week for #wccchallenge was nodes.

I went with the nodes on horsetail - a relative of the fern - Ancient Grass

No comments - just stream of conscious code until it worked.

  6. Here are a few #horsetail plants, seen on my walk #today (yesterday, actually).

    Plus a wandering "woolly bear" (#TigerMoth) #caterpillar.

Horsetails are 150 million-year-old living fossils that were eaten by - yes! - Jurassic #dinosaurs.

Also, their unique node spacing inspired #JohnNapier in 1614 to invent #logarithms.

Admittedly, some rude US jurisdictions (wtf Oregon...?) classify them as noxious weeds.

But imho this is an amazing plant with a wonderful résumé 💚

  7. Spring emerging in our Seattle garden (North Beach) along our little unnamed stream which flows into Puget Sound. The #skunkcabbage have lived here for probably 400 years ever since the massive earthquake that lifted this land from the sea, or so they say. I’ve lived here only 47 years. This used to be an overgrown mess filled with the neighborhood discards. You couldn’t see the stream. One lingering #horsetail millions removed. #spring #landscapedesign #pnw #seattle #gardening

  8. The highlight of #today for me was the dog walk, especially the bit where we ran into the Marge Simpson plants.

#OTD The North County Times ran a little article about #Weeds titled,
    "What do #Yarrow, #Chicory, #Horsetail, #ShepherdsPurse, and #GroundIvy have in common?"

The answer is that they are all considered weeds.

In the post, the author of "Just Weeds," Pamela Jones, countered:

"I would like to see the word weed abolished altogether for being one of the most intolerant, negative words in the English language."
