It’s a side effect of being under the illusion that political alignment is one-dimensional: left & right. It isn’t.

Trying to make sense why authoritarians are the same no matter which political side they used to get into power is not at all difficult if you do a very simple thing:

You add one dimension.

Suddenly, you have no problem. In addition to left/right you can also go up/down on an axis of authoritarian-liberal! 🤷‍♂️

I read news about the #farright these days so often it is weird.
Why this ambiguous word? It isn't clear who is mean. It does read like the attempt to avoid the word #fascist or #neoNazi. Technically not all of these fit the label but then I again by the elitist definition of fascism most of these people wouldn't make the cut anyway.
I get why these people prefer the word far right but the news should be less #horseshoetheory and more direct.

I would also like to state that the "punch a Nazi" debate would be much less of a debate if the "punch a Nazi" crowd didn't keep demonstrating that they have next to no ability to correctly identify a Nazi.

The real #HorseshoeTheory is the statist liberal tendency to respond to fascism, not by radically committing to their foundational principles (individualism, tolerance, pluralism), but by embracing the very authoritarianism & nationalism they initially oppose.

There are things so horrible that Trump has done that many here could never vote for him. If true, why can't these same people understand that this might also be true for others re Biden and #Gaza etc? Same approach russia has very effectively used in the US and France. You see this every time you see Greenwald on Tucker Carlson, or a French protester throw a Molotov cocktail.
It's virtually impossible to counter as it's legal and the targets predisposed to hate their own government and distrust real media, to the point that many of them no doubt know they're working for russia against their own country.
