#horserace

Yesterday, I watched the l'Arc 2025 Live, and oh my god, the curse is literally real...
Japanese horses in the race were Byzantine Dream (6), Croix Du Nord (15), and Alohi Alii (16)

The race was about to start in 5 minutes and the sky deciced to turn on the rain... it was the most perfectly timed rain ever...
As you may know, rain can make the track more hard for horses, the turf becomes very soft, causing the horses to almost feel as if they are swimming
It already rained the other day, but it started to rain again at the right time
They knew it was gonna be soft again, they been preparing for it, but they didn't expect it to be very soft

Byzantine Dream got distracted by the gate crew and was looking at him thus getting a late start
The rain affected Croix Du Nord, he remained at the front initially but lost stamina toward the end of the final spurt
The results are Byzantine Dream got 6th, Croix Du Nord got 14th, and Alohi Alii got 16th
The winner was Daryz (France), with odds of "16 to 1" Anything can happen in l'Arc
We lost again, Japan never won l'Arc

Once the race ended, the weather cleared and became sunny again, literally a real curse
At this point, Japan should consider entering a dirt horse for next year's race

It looks like a lot of fun -- but I think I'd have to start making a spreadsheet with all the stats and stuff and then start using something like R to analyze all the information.... All of this could be like having a gambling addiction... #games #gachagame #horseraces #horserace

  6. What a coincidence!
    Once again @Minimus participates in this month's exercise in #Turnverein / #GymnasticClub.

This month we are doing #Wettreiten respectively #Wettrennen / #HorseRace respectively #Footrace, which means one or more plushies with or without another one on their back are running a short distance as fast as enjoyable.
And that's what you're seem to do, are you?

    Snide bit about "tailwinds" too.

This, an article titled "Breakthrough drugs for dementia" (which turned out to be speculations about what's on the horizon), and other trashiness, has left me with as much trust for #TheGuardian as for #RupertMurdoch's #TheAustralian.

At least Rupert's is up front on being a fascist-adjacent, #ClimateInaction, propaganda machine.

  12. Politico, having palpably learned NOTHING from the journalistic debacle of the campaign for #election2024, is publishing a story today (don't count on me for a link) which consists in name-dropping and speculating about who has the best chances of winning the primaries for… the 2028 US presidential election. Is there yet a #BrokenPolitico hashtag @jeffjarvis ?

  14. CW: US election, polling

New poll, same tight race across 7 swing states

A new poll of the 7 swing states continues to show more of the same: The race between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump is statistically deadlocked.

Among likely voters, Trump leads in Arizona (49% to 46%) and North Carolina (50% to 47%); Harris leads in Georgia (51% to 47%), Michigan (49% to 47%), Pennsylvania (49% to 47%) and Wisconsin (50% to 47%). Nevada is tied at 48%.

Among registered voters, Harris leads Georgia (50% to 44%), Nevada (47% to 44%), Pennsylvania (49% to 46%) and Wisconsin (50% to 46%). Trump leads Arizona (50% to 44%), Michigan (47% to 46%) and North Carolina (49% to 45%).

The margin of error ranged from ±3.9% to 5% in each state. For the overall total of likely voters, which Harris led 49% to 48%, the margin of error was ±1.7%. The poll, conducted from Sept. 30-Oct. 15, surveyed 5,016 registered voters.

  15. #DJT #campaign almost exclusively targets toxic tone towards appeal for #AlphaMale voters, decidedly and unrepentantly so, referring to #press as #retarded. #TrumpCampaign leads in appeal towards #MaleVoters by average of 10% in recent #polls, #KamalaHarris in turn has 10% lead with #womenvoters, but 5% less of that important #demographic than Biden polled in 2020.

  17. Rebecca Solnit nails it.

' [Mainstream US news media] pursue the appearance of fairness and balance by treating the true and the false, the normal and the outrageous, as equally valid and by normalizing Republicans, especially Donald Trump, whose gibberish gets translated into English and whose past crimes and present-day lies and threats get glossed over. They neglect, again and again, important stories with real consequences. '

  19. At Bloomberg, Nia-Malika Henderson neatly summarizes the differences between Biden and Trump and what is at stake in the 2024 election:
“The choice in November isn’t between two old men.
It’s between an unhinged, wannabe dictator and a stable, well-meaning leader who believes in America’s bedrock principals of freedom and democracy.”

Trump has manic crazy energy; President Biden is wise, weathered, tough, and experienced.

In a fair fight, Biden stands more than a good chance of winning.

Unfortunately, this fight is anything but fair.
Mainstream news media appears to be actively #rigging the outcome for Trump

To that point, last weekend, instead of focusing on Donald Trump’s threats to be a dictator on day one of his “presidency” when/if he takes office in 2025, plans for mass deportations and concentration camps, and his gangster-like extortion of NATO and telling Putin to invade Europe,
the #NewYorkTimes wrote this fawning profile:

"Mr. Trump, by contrast, does not appear to be suffering the effects of time in such visible ways. Mr. Trump often dyes his hair and appears unnaturally tan. He is heavyset and tall, and he uses his physicality to project strength in front of crowds. When he takes the stage at rallies, he basks in adulation for several minutes, dancing to an opening song, and then holds forth in speeches replete with macho rhetoric and bombast that typically last well over an hour, a display of stamina."

In every election: lots feel dissatisfied with their choices. Our press overlooks this.

Come November, though, any lack of enthusiasm will cede to the reality of the #volatility of a second Trump presidency.

Not that polls this far out are very meaningful. But polls are a huge asset for media organizations that want to do #horserace all the time.

Instead, they should focus like a laser on the stakes of the election.

  20. I have read, watched and listened to days of breathless #Political #HorseRace coverage of the #GOP #IowaCaucus and not once has any #media outlet mentioned that the results are a pretty poor sampling of a small fractional #minority of the state's voters who even bother to #engage in #VoterParticipation ... In a state of over 3 million people, barely 108,000 voters participated...That is way less than 4% of the state's current population. 43

Nearly the same amount of people that voted attended a Women's Volleyball game in next door Nebraska last year as bothered to vote in this #GOPprimary...

But do go on and keep basing electoral predictions and extrapolate millions of megabytes of media coverage on Iowa ?

Total voters tallied are basically the population of the state's third largest town Davenport.

I cannot even find out a tally of how many were female. The grand total is not even 15% of the state's registered #Republican voters.

Take this gushing #MassMedia re-coronation of #DJT and his #Flex with a grain of #salt and realize we have a lot more diverse electorate nationally that may or may not be voting on far different issues and considering other information and candidates than a rural state that is one of Amurica's least diverse, with 90% caucasian citizenery in general, and even higher representation than that in the registered GOP voter base.

  23. Marc Gunther on Jerry Brown's 1992 presidential run:

"Horse race coverage of the campaign can distort the political process and prove unfair to candidates and #voters — especially when reporters bet on the wrong horses.

Their predictions affect who gets covered, and therefore who gets heard; they also affect a candidate's ability to raise money, and discourage voters from supporting candidates tagged as losers."

  24. Hanlon's razor is the proposition that one should "Never ascribe to malice that which is adequately explained by incompetence." It's actually a Napoleon quote.

    To which I'll add, LeftistLawyer's first #capitalist corollary --

"Never ascribe to incompetence, that which is adequately explained by #greed."

Which, if you think about it, is really just a euphemism for malice. You have to be ok with the oblique suffering of others to be a good capitalist.

    For example:

    The #Covid19 Response.
    The #ClimateCrisis.
    The #MSM.
    The #horserace #politics.
    The #enshittification.
    The #BullshitJobs

So please stop scratching your heads in confusion about why so many things are so fucked up. We celebrate immiserating the poor and lionizing malicious greed in the capitalist world. Hanlon was the greatest elite enabler of all time.

  25. @wdlindsy. With each new revelation, I can't help but wonder why we are only now reading about this. Did the #Louisiana #media do a better job than the national media, or was no one paying attention? As a #teacher, I would like to give the #NYT and the #WashingtonPost an assignment. Each day, instead of doing a #horserace article for the umpteenth time, pick a #congressperson and dig into their record. Write about their #interviews, #sources of funding, belief (or not) in #democracy.

  26. @knittingknots2. I said this somewhere else in response to a pice about #MikeJohnson's ascension to one of the most powerful positions in the government. It would have been helpful if the #media had spent more time on his commitment to #fascism before he became speaker. Maybe one less article interviewing diners in #Ohio? Maybe one less article on the #horserace rather than the #stakes, to invoke @jayrosen_nyu's crucial formulation? Maybe one less article on #democrats in alleged disarray?
