I'm re-reading "Lieutenant Hornblower" and thought this passage seemed an excellent summation of what makes Hornblower an interesting protagonist:
"Hornblower was a man always ready to adopt the bold course, a man who infinitely preferred action to inaction; widely read in his profession and yet a practical seaman, as Bush had already had plenty of opportunity to observe. A student yet a man of action; a fiery spirit and yet discreet"

Manchmal führt es bei mir zu neuen Erkenntnissen, alte #Fernsehserien wieder zu sehen. Nachdem ich #Hornblower von 1999 wieder ansah, merkte ich, wie schlecht #BlackSails von 2017 eigentlich ist.
Als ich Black Sails das erste Mal sah, hatte ich einfach Spaß an einem unterhaltsamen Abenteuerstoff, wobei mir damals schon aufstieß, wie schlecht "Seemannsgarn" a la "Pirates of the Caribbean" mit realhistorischen Geschehen und realen Charakteren zusammenpasst.

I rarely give a book 5/5, but Lieutenant Hornblower, the 2nd book in the series was near perfect. Great military strategy, nailbiting ups and down, and witness to the growth of an officer into a commander. Indirectly, it is also a great book on the journey to becoming a leader.

Got started on the Hornblower series of Napoleonic naval adventures with the first book Mr. Midshipman Hornblower. It was engaging and pretty soon I was looking up sailing-ship jargon, living on a ship and getting lost in the history and places of the Napoleonic era. Riveting read!

Another #fanfiction rec again? So soon?
Yes. I rarely do these, but two in three-ish days it is, because I just finished a brilliant #Hornblower modern au fanfic with the end ship of Hornblower/Kennedy/Bush.
It’s a wonderfully written story with enough series/book elements to satisfy, magnificent characterisation, and funny moments. Mind the tags though - it’s not graphic but deals with recovery from sexual assault and some violence https://archiveofourown.org/series/777747 #ao3 #ficrec
