    Verse 1
You can keep hunting for a reason
    In between the lines
I'm going to write my epitaph
    On a bullet-broken spine

    Look under number 16
    See who you will find
    Rip another page out
    Until the clock ticks 49.

    Verse 2
    No, this isn't ketchup
    You're not going blind
    Who's the soft boy now?
And now we're out of time.

    Despair is on the menu
    Hate is the wine
    The table's set for 16
    Here is where we'll dine

    Bridge
    Shame me
    Name me
    Call me what you will
    Fame me
    Game me
It's time to pay the bill

    Outro
    I'm not your anti-hero
    I'm not the martyr kind
    I'm just another lost boy
    Who stepped over the line

    No more power-ups
    No more petty crime
    Checked out at 1208
    Out of sight
    Out of mind

  2. Hey all :FediverseSymbol:

    We had another linguistic thought.

(You can see our previous linguistic queries on looking for words for the pain of being misunderstood and finding an alternative word for hope.)

We realised that English has a specific word for the inability to experience pleasure from activities you'd usually enjoy: anhedonia.

However, it doesn't seem like there's an equivalent official word for the inability to experience hope.

Instead, there are only words like hopeless or hopelessness, but those words do not really suggest that the person can no longer derive hope from situations they'd normally expect to.

Following the same logic as the above, we think it would be something like an- plus either elpĭ́s or elpída.

So, we think it'd be either anelpis or anelpida.

    Thoughts? Suggestions? Corrections?

  3. CW: Highly existential thoughts on hope, prompted by a John Green video on the Vlog Brothers channel; may be too bleak for some

We often agree with John Green on many topics, but we do not agree with his thoughts shared in the latest video.

We wrote our thoughts in a comment under the video, but we wanted to share them here too.

We don't really agree with you fully on this John, if we're understanding you correctly. You make it sound like you cannot strive for a better world without having hope, but so very many people keep going not because of having hope, but in spite of feeling somewhat or even entirely hopeless. As a realistic nihilist (not an optimistic one, like from the Kurzgesagt video), there may be no inherent meaning to existence, but we get to give our life meaning. We struggle daily with intense feelings of anxiety, depression, emotional dysregulation, and hopelessness not because we genuinely feel we're going to win or succeed, but because we have to try in spite of everything. That isn't clinging to hope: it's continuing in spite of hopelessness. It's siege mentality. It's expecting to lose, but refusing to give in. It's defiance, stubbornness, and spite: not hope. We make a choice every day to keep trying because there are people out there who need help whom we can help, even just a little, but sometimes a lot more than we realise. It's possible to feel so broken and destroyed that you just want to give into the void some or even most of the time, with your mood changing like the ebb and flow of the tides or a flash flood from a monsoon, but still find yourself clinging to a piece of debris when the storm clears a little, treading water with all your energy, just so you can keep somebody else's head above the water to stop them from drowning. Is this enough for anybody to keep going? Not really, and we'd never judge or criticise anybody for wanting to let go at a time of their choice, and one day we may hit a particularly-bad storm that finally capsizes us for good, but until then, we'll keep going without any real sense of hope or belief, because maybe we can help a few others... and maybe some of them will have hope and may challenge the darkness and horrors of this world.

  4. A quotation from Eric Hoffer

To have a grievance is to have a purpose in life. A grievance can almost serve as a substitute for hope; it not infrequently happens that those who hunger for hope give their allegiance to him who offers them a grievance.

  9. A quotation from Euripides

CHORUS: Come away, dear ones, come away.
To the camp, to the place of the ships, to the sea,
To the strange new life of slavery,
For all are the slaves of Destiny.

[ΧΟΡΟΣ: ἴτε πρὸς λιμένας σκηνάς τε, φίλαι,
       τῶν δεσποσύνων πειρασόμεναι

  10. A quotation from Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr.

You can never be too cautious in your prognosis, in the view of the great uncertainty of the course of any disease not long watched, and the many unexpected turns it may take.
I think I am not the first to utter the following caution : —
Beware how you take away hope from any human being. Nothing is clearer than that the merciful Creator intends to blind most people as they pass down into the dark valley. Without very good reasons, temporal or spiritual, we should not interfere with his kind arrangements. It is the height of cruelty and the extreme of impertinence to tell your patient he must die, except you are sure that he wishes to know it, or that there is some particular cause for his knowing it. I should be especially unwilling to tell a child that it could not recover; if the theologians think it necessary, let them take the responsibility. God leads it by the hand to the edge of the precipice in happy unconsciousness, and I would not open its eyes to what he wisely conceals.

Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr. (1809-1894) American poet, essayist, scholar
Speech (1859-03-10), Valedictory Address, Harvard University School of Medicine

  11. By conforming to the #Democratic and #Republican #Parties wish that you wholeheartedly #Hate one of the parties, you actively support the #Gridlock and #Hopelessness that characterises #US #Politics and makes it unique in a very negative way.
The hate is completely impotent and doesn't and can't, lead to any positive change, which is exactly what the ruling #Oligarchy wants.

Previous experiences with the #MyGovWebsite and the #ServicesAustraliaWebsite have trained me up such that I now have a sense of #Futility and #Hopelessness.

As for the websites' designers and the shit-level standards of the website-design industry - thuggish creeps.

And now to sit down with failure almost guarranteed.

  13. A quotation from Richter, Jean-Paul:

    «
What makes old age so sad is, not that our joys, but that our hopes then cease.

  14. CW: doom anxiety, or something like that

I'm a climatejustice activist since 2019 and haven't really had anything like climate anxiety until recently.

I'm not sure if it's because I had to deal with a severe depression until the beginning of this year and didn't have it in me to worry about anything else too, or because shit is getting way worse in most parts of the world right now. Probably both.

I can't really describe, what I'm feeling. I guess "despair" might describe it best.

In 2019, in many countries, not a single political party dared to openly claim that they don't give a shit about the climate. Now it's almost the opposite. Almost all parties are anti science, anti future, anti democracy and anti human rights and they believe, that will get people to vote for them. They are right, unless there is a party more to the right than them. Then they just push voters to that party.

I'm worried because the acceptance for fascism grows and grows, while the acceptance for climate justice fades away.

I'm not hopeless - I don't think we can afford that (but being too hopeful neither). I'm not going to stop fighting. I just don't know which fight to pick. Where can I use my energy effectively to make a change?

  15. Sobering moment: diving into the #Brightspace "community" site. Figured out the odd little workaround to get into the place where feature requests can be made.

Over 10,000 feature requests. One directly related to a post I recently made was first submitted in 2013. It's been over a decade.

You can search through these by status and some broad categories but not by "number of upvotes" and not by "date submitted." No way for me (right now?) to know how quickly BS gets critical issues fixed, which would be useful to gauge whether I want to spend my time on their community portal.

Right now I'm going to do a bit of upvoting/requesting but mostly try to restructure my teaching so I don't need Brightspace.

  16. Yes. Rates of #mentalhealth problems have continually increased among young people over the past 15 years, regardless of how you measure it: In 2021, 42% of U.S. #highschool students reported “persistent feelings of #sadness or #hopelessness,” up from 28% in 2011. The increase was especially dramatic among #girls. yourlocalepidemiologist.substa #socialmedia #teens #violence #socialpressures #politics #opiods #ClimateCrisis #racialinequity

  18. "Life is hopeless because no matter what you do, you can't escape the endless cycle of birth, struggle, and death. No matter how hard you try, you can't change the fact that you will eventually grow old, get sick, and die. The world is full of pain, suffering, and injustice, and no matter how much you try to make things better, it always seems like things just get worse. So why bother trying at all? Just embrace the hopelessness and let it consume you. #hopelessness #pointless #whybother "
