A closer, quieter Bryce view. Warm low light on a tight cluster of hoodoos, a fin anchoring the left, and one small pine standing among the spires. That little tree is what makes the frame… something living against all that stone.
-
Bryce Canyon from the Navajo Loop Trail. What gets you here is the density… hoodoos on hoodoos, spires packed shoulder to shoulder as far as you can see, warm light on every one. You believe the “most on Earth” claim from here.
-
A single Bryce fin lit against the blue. The sun sat right behind the rock, so its edges glowed and the sky behind the peak went bright and warm. Two little windows worn clean through near its base.
-
Standing on the rim at Bryce, trying to take it in at once. I was after depth… hoodoos stacking back row on row, a sunlit wall on the right, hazy plateau layers fading to the horizon. The scale keeps outrunning the frame.

A quieter side of Bryce. The sun hadn’t committed, so light fell in patches across the amphitheater… some hoodoos lit, others still cool, ridgelines stacking into haze. Not the postcard glow, but I liked the mood.

At the base of a wall of Bryce hoodoos, looking straight up… spires crowded together and soaring into a hard blue sky. From below you feel how dense and tall they are, warm orange stone stacked shoulder to shoulder.

Following the recent heatwave: Active #wildfire near Ille-sur-Têt in southern #France - yesterday it was reported around 1000 ha, today it grew to about 4600 ha, prompting evacuations.
We visited #Ille-sur-Têt just recently to see its rich geomorpholigical treasures, the #hoodoos - what a lovely region and I deeply hope everyone, including the hundreds of #firefighters deployed, will make it safely through this in incident.

💁🏻♀️ TIL: #BryceCanyon in #Utah isn’t actually a #canyon – it’s a series of natural amphitheaters holding the world’s largest collection of #hoodoos, rock spires up to 60m tall that began forming 50 million years ago. 🏜️
The #park sits at 2,400m elevation, hosts #endangered species like the Utah #prairiedog and #California #condor, and became an International Dark Sky Park in 2019. 🌌

The amphitheater at Bryce Canyon never gets old.

The final entry of my 2025 Parks Tour adventure! Trying to convey the sheer magnitude, the overwhelming mystique, and the pure magic of Bryce Canyon National Park is impossible. But I tried with this blog post, and the included video:

Hiking with Hoodoos: New Mexico’s Tent Rocks
Scenic stone vista“Is it any wonder that the Cochiti people believe Tent Rocks is a living landscape, as their mere presence changes by the moment based on the trajectory of the sun, the angularity of light and shadows, variabilities in weather conditions, or the demeanor of clouds passing overhead.”

We had our first opportunity to visit magical Kasha-Katuwe Tent Rocks National Monument located between Albuquerque and Santa Fe on April 16. It is hard to describe the surreal beauty of this national monument that includes a magnificent slot canyon, tent-shaped rock formations that are jaw-dropping in their multi-faceted geological history, and other spectacular natural features dotting this post-volcanic landscape.
The national monument is situated within the Cochiti Pueblo.
“For the Pueblo de Cochiti, Kasha-Katuwe is a living cultural landscape. The cliffs, mesas, and canyons are connected to oral histories, traditional teachings, and long-standing relationships between the people and the land. These places have served as areas for travel, observation, learning, and spiritual reflection across generations. Respect for the land is central to Pueblo values, and care for Kasha-Katuwe reflects responsibilities passed down through families and community leadership.” – Cochiti.org
Due to the rare and delicate geological structure of the formations, as well as their spiritual importance to the Cochiti people, Kasha-Katuwe Tent Rocks National Monument has a limited operating schedule that requires prior reservations and prepaid fees for visitors to traverse these amazing formations.
Source: blm.govA national recreation trail leads both hikers and sightseers through a meandering slot canyon and up a steep incline past the tapered hoodoos to a mesa summit. A second trail passes a once-occupied shelter cave and a gathering of hoodoos that resemble a quiet campground amongst the juniper trees or Native American teepee village from afar. A separate scenic overlook is located at the northwest corner of the monument.
Throughout this post are a series of photographs that depict the amazing beauty of Kasha-Katuwe Tent Rocks National Monument.
Peace!
