Manemos, een grote onbekende
Wijding aan Manemos (Musée des Beaux-Arts, Lyon)Ik blog regelmatig over antieke religie en die stukjes eindigen nogal eens met de constatering dat we iets niet weten. Waarom Psyche op een dromedaris rijdt, waarom Hercules Magusanus vroeger gold als de Hercules van Magusa en nu als syncretisme: dat werk. Ik wil morgen schrijven over het raadsel hoe het christendom in Egypte is aangekomen. Bij elk van deze vragen is de kern van de problematiek dezelfde: we hebben te weinig informatie. En de data die we hebben, zijn ambigu.
Het onbekende platteland
Wat we wél weten: iets over de staatsculten, iets over filosofische visies op het goddelijke, iets over systematiseringen als “de twaalf Olympische goden”. Over de echte godsdienst van de normale Grieken, Babyloniërs, Kelten, Romeinen, Egyptenaren, Syriërs weten we daarentegen vrijwel niets. Welke oogstfeesten hadden ze? Hoe sloten de opvattingen van de “little tradition” van het platteland aan bij de “great tradition” van de stedelijke elites? Welke familieleden voltrokken welke rituelen? Vereerden ze überhaupt goden en zo ja, wat waren dat van bovennatuurlijke krachten?
Feitelijk is het antieke platteland een voortzetting van de Prehistorie. De meeste mensen schreven immers niet en als iemand die wél kon schrijven iets noteerde, is het niet zelden misleidend: Synesios van Kyrene presenteert ergens boeren die het hebben over Odysseus alsof het iemand is die nog gisteren in de buurt was.noot Synesios, Brief 148.16. Dat zegt meer over Synesios’ literaire preoccupaties dan over het plattelandsgeloof in de Cyrenaica.
Manemos
Een heel enkele keer hebben we desondanks een doorkijkje. Zoals het tweede-eeuwse reliëf hierboven, dat is te zien in het Musée des Beaux-Arts in Lyon. Het komt uit Syrië en de steensoort bewijst dat het is vervaardigd op de steppe ten oosten van het antieke Emesa (Homs). We zien een ruiter bij een altaar en iemand die afscheid neemt van die ruiter. In de Griekse inscriptie wordt de ruiter, Manemos, aangeduid als halfgod, een heros. De eigennamen ogen Semitisch en duiden op het zuiden van Syrië, dus niet de regio waar de steensoort vandaan komt.

ης Γολασου ἀπὸ ΣεβηκωνηςAan de heros Manemos wijdde Daisan-
es, zoon van Golasos uit Sebekone dit.We kennen dit type afbeelding wel. Meestal draagt de ruiter Parthische kleding (een broek) en heeft hij ook een kapsel dat we associëren met de bewoners van Mesopotamië en de Iraanse hoogvlakte. Maar dat is hier niet het geval; de man rechts, die we met Daisanes kunnen identificeren, draagt een Romeinse toga en de ruiter, Manemos, draagt reiskledij, zoals destijds gangbaar in het oude Nabije Oosten. (Mocht u nog eens een accuraat plaatje zoeken van Jezus, denk dan liever hier aan dan aan de Ottomaanse gewaden die traditioneel in Jezus-films worden gebruikt.)
Manemos draagt een schild en speer, en heeft een pijlkoker waar de beeldhouwer zich merkbaar op heeft uitgeleefd. Hij lijkt wat op een boogschutter uit de Romeinse hulptroepen. Maar terwijl het in de hellenistische wereld niet ongebruikelijk was om iemand als heros te vereren, is deze praktijk niet bekend uit de regio waar deze inscriptie vandaan komt.
Een soort van conclusie
Het meest waarschijnlijk is nog – althans, dat is de toelichting in Lyon – dat Daisanes een van zijn voorouders de eer van een halfgod heeft toegekend, in een gebied waar dit niet zo gebruikelijk was. Daisanes zal geen keuterboer zijn geweest, want hij kon het reliëf en een Grieks-schrijvende beeldhouwer betalen. Ik stel me hem voor als een eigenzinnig type, die in het atelier “zo’n ruiterreliëf, maar dan niet met Parthische maar met normale kleren” kwam bestellen, en die zich er weinig van aantrok dat buurtgenoten zo’n halfgoddelijke status niet herkenden. Kortom, iemand die weigerde in te burgeren.
